Given wants loan switch

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Given wants loan switch

Postby Mark (Blue Army) » Sun Sep 19, 2010 5:56 pm

Shay Given has confirmed that he will seek a loan move if he cannot wrestle the No.1 jersey back from Joe Hart at Manchester City.

Hart, who has become England's first choice since the World Cup, spent last season on loan at Birmingham City.

Upon his return to Eastlands, Roberto Mancini handed him the No.1 spot - meaning Given has been left to kick his heels on the bench.

"It's very, very frustrating. I know it doesn't matter what I do on the training pitch, I won't be playing at the weekend. If I'm flying around like Clark Kent in goals, I still won't play on Saturday. That can be demoralising," he told the Sunday Times.

A move away from the club before the transfer window closed was vetoed by City, but Given insists that he will not just sit on the bench.

"The club said I wasn't going anywhere and that was frustrating," he continued.

"We'll see what happens come January and hopefully if the situation's the same I can go on loan and try and get some games in.

"I've never said I want to leave Man City. I believe it's a big club that in the next couple of years is going to do big things. I want to be part of that but I also want to be playing football.

"I wouldn't mind where a loan was and wouldn't rule out abroad if it was a good club and a good team, no disrespect to a club that's fighting relegation and getting pummelled every week - though at the minute that probably seems better than what I'm doing."

Many expected Given to be handed a chance to impress during the club's Europa League campaign, but Hart was again given the nod against Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday.

And the Irishman admits he was disappointed, adding: "I thought I'd have played but I don't know what the manager's thinking because he hasn't told me."

Well, I'm not surprised really. Bobby had a big decision to make - Joe v Shay, and he choose Joe (sensibly IMHO). He would've looked stupid if, after 10 games in Joe started to be flaky and was shown not to be up to the job, so no loan for Shay. shay would probably have played against Salzburg if Joe hadn't made a mistake against Blackburn. Had Shay played it would look as if Bobby had lost confidense in Joe. So tough Shay.

Actually, I was expecting more tales of dissatisfaction. Apart from Shay - understandable, and a bit mild really - we have Ade, and let's be honest he has previous.

I suppose Lescot could be the next in line for a moan, but the, many might consider him lucky to be on the wages he is.

Other than that I'd be very surprised if anyone else has anything to complain about. Not that that will stop the papers quoting unspecified players talking of unrest in the camp.

Wish he'd shut up until the transfer window is open. He can't go anywhere for four months so what's the point in whining to the press now?

Gives the media exactly what they want and let's them carry on their campaign of 'player unrest at city'.

I don't blame him for wanting a move...Hes in his more mature yrs now and far too good to be sitting on a bench.
Joe Hart has the world at his feet bein Eng and Citys No1 and he aint going to be knocked off his perch for anyone.
It must be very hard for any keeper being no2.Just sitting there on the bench for most of your career.I wouldn't bloody like it.
Its obvious hes going to be sold in Jan...The club needs to think what club they move him on to..Id say a non prem team..SPL or abroad would suit us nicely.

Should have been given all the cup games regardless like Mancini promised to both Hart and Given before the season started that he would use them both during the year.

Fair enough, he has said it now (if true), so we won't need this story trotting out every single weekend from now until the transfer window opening, particularly as he looks unlikely to be anywhere near the first team.

Cant fault him for wanting to play first team football, a keeper of his quality should do.

As long as there is a 24hr call back clause so we dont end up in fulop situation again, then I wish him luck in getting a loan.

I agree, no problem with him leaving but make sure we can call him back

No. Hart is our No. 1 choice and has only played a handful of games with these players. We need to play Hart whenever possible for the first few months minimum. After that you may look to rotate on say early round FA cup games against lower league opposition but no guarantees. Its hard on Given but we're not a charity.

fair enough that he wants to play but no need for the (from what i can see) the sly dig at the manager at the end.

Name one club in the world that has two keepers like Hart and Given in the squad.

Answer- No one which is why Shay will go and needs to go.

To answer your question...City do!!!...and really that's all that matters. Why should we let Given go just because we have 2 class keepers and nobody else does? Is it some form of unfair advantage that we should relinquish?
It's not luck that got us into that position, it was a canny buying policy. Spotting young talent in Hart and buying it. Then buying Shay because we needed a top class keeper at the time.

Has anyone seen Shay play since recovering from his dislocated shoulder? I wonder if he is as good as before he got injured? I myself have dislocated my shoulder along with the likes of Nedum but for Ned it's not really a big issue once fully fit.

Once a shoulder is dislocated it will always be weaker there's no getting around that fact, you can build the muscle back up but it's always more likely to pop out again. Can Given still make the same stretching dives across the pitch that he used to? If he's not the same keeper as before I would suggest letting him go, maybe for a deal for an adequate back up. Personally against quality opposition I don't think Taylor is good enough.

You really rate them so highly? Which ones would you start ahead of Hart or Given.

How about because he's been an important servant to the club and it would be a shame to force him to spend most of the rest of his career on the bench. We didn't buy him to sit on the bench, it's not what he signed up for. It's harder to buy top class players when you repay the faith they show in you by betraying promises. Given signed up to win trophies, if money was the problem we could just pay him more to sit on the bench. He wants to play, he wants to win. If he wants to leave and Mancini is willing to let him, so be it.

I don't hate the guy for preferring to move on, but just the same I'd be shocked if he was promised anything and I don't think he's been betrayed whatsoever.

He chose to join a club with a very promising and creditable goalkeeper whom he usurped early on, but who has since apparently surpassed him, however slightly.

Agreed, it's not like we went out and bought Buffon 6 months after he joined.

If he wants to go out on loan fine, but only as long as it doesn't put us in the same situation as last season, so recall clause!!!!!!
