Chief Marketing Officer leaves - 'blow' or not?

I notice that the well-known tabloid 'Brand Republic' is carrying a negative story (nothing new there then) about the departure of David Pullan last week. Yet they give no reason for his departure, so it could equally be that he wasn't pulling up enough trees and was gently shown the door, Cookie-style. Mustn't let that theory ruin a good anti-City story though, so anyone got any background info?

http://www.brandrepublic.com/news/10342 ... ans-stall/?

Manchester City Football Club has suffered a dent to its ambitions to become one of the biggest football brands in the world, following the departure of its chief marketing officer, David Pullan.

Pullan, who left last week, had only been in the role for about 18 months. He was appointed in March 2009 as the club looked to grow its client base under the stewardship of Abu Dhabi United and its multi-millionaire owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It is understood that Pullan has left with no job to go to and has returned to live in London.

Manchester City declined to comment on his departure, other than to confirm the club is looking for a replacement. However, a source claimed Pullan’s chief marketing officer role could be split into two.

Pullan reported directly to chief executive Garry Cook. Chris Kay, a former executive at ad agency Fallon, is still with the club as head of marketing and is the leading internal candidate to replace him.

Prior to joining Manchester City, Pullan, who has 20 years’ experience in media strategy, brands and marketing, worked at agency network Aegis. He held the position of president of global client management at its digital marketing services unit, Isobar.

In January, chief executive Cook claimed that Manchester City is ‘without doubt going to be the biggest and best football club in the world’.

You can only ever read between the lines on "stories" like this. The club have declined to comment becasue there will be a confidentiality clause in his severance package. Similarly Mr Pullan will not be able to comment. No reason not to speculate though, he doesn't have another job to go to so he was either unhappy and left on is own terms, in which case he would be free to comment and so would City, or he was "asked to leave". Clearly he was not made redundant as they are looking for a replacement. You would conclude that they are looking for someone who can do a better job. They have not appointed someone straight away so they are taking their time to get it right. Any way I struggle to see how this "puts a dent in our plans", the guy has not been poached to go to a bigger and better job so the club clearly feel they can do better with someone else.

Every day, all over the world, companies appoint people who on the face of it are 'ideally' suited to a particular role and sometimes, it just doesn't work out as everyone perceived it would.

This could be for a number of reasons, none of which are likely to be sinister. For instance, they didn't get on with Clients, other personnel or even their ultimate boss or maybe the Company moved away from it's original intended path and suddenly realised that they no longer had the right person for the job.

Either way, this is why we have contracts and agreements and laws in place to make sure that everyone accept their responsibilities and that employment can be terminated as fairly and practicably as possible.

In this case, who knows what the specific reason is? All we do know is that there seems a constant churn of Executives and Senior Management at MCFC which to be honest was always going to be the case when a new regime takes over.

Granted that this guy was actually appointed by the new regime, but very few of the Pre AD takeover are now left.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing ..... it's just the way it is.

I really miss the Splash Screens that used to be on the Old Website - Remember the "Wright Here, Right Now" one when Sweep returned. I hope the new marketing Officer will get these back for us...

Personally I don't give a shit. My job, as a long time supporter and as far as I'm concerned, is to get behind the team.

Marketing / Administrative stuff is something that the hierachy of the club deal with. It essentially effects any returns they may make, looking to make / feel they should be making.

I'm not really swayed as to whether I should be getting a Zinfandel t-shirt as opposed to a Polo shirt, or a box instead of a restaurant corporate hospitality package.

What matters to me is what goes on on the field and hopefully the silverware we get over the next few years.

Does anyone know if any of the cleaning lady jobs have been affected? I am really worried

What about the ball boys, are they all ok or have any of them left recently?

All gone mate!

Some consultants came over from AD to assess them and found they were not up to the job.

Evidently, we are clearly intent on making sure that all our Cleaners and Ball Boys are indeed 'the best in the world'!

The cleaners have been replaced by stunning looking young women, who smell nice ..... and have a degree in mechanical engineering so that they can do a first time fix on things like vacuum cleaners etc. All the sprays and aerosols are now branded MCFC merchandise and all the dusters have a nice club crest on them and are only allowed to be used once. All the above equipment is now available in the Club Shop.

The ball boys have been replaced by Robots who have been specifically programmed to operate the multi ball system when we are losing but sit on their arses and not even bother retrieving the ball when we are winning. They are also programmed to smile at our players but scowl at our opponents and take the piss out of them when they are losing.

It was all Mancini and Marwood's ideas and considered an essential part of the 'Project'. Mancini wanted to implement this at Inter and apparently that is why he was sacked ..... it had nothing to do with not winning the Champions league but that was all hushed up. Mancini has recently stated that Robots "are his friends, have a good mentality" and "eeza good ball boy"!

Also, Stephen Ireland said the robots and cleaners took the piss out of him and his dead grandma(s), Bellamy didn't like the ball boys smiling at him and Petrov didn't like everything being clean ..... and that is really why they were all moved on.

Remember .... you heard it here first !
