Referee had no option. If he hadn't sent him off he would've been slaughtered by all involved in football, apart from the most biased of blues.
Shame it was in the first five minutes, as it effectively killed the game. We fought well, but up against a team who can keep the ball and pass it around as well s them, we were stuffed from that point.

Surely this rule should be for the cynical prevention of a goalscoring opportunity NOT an honest but mistimed challenge - fuclin FIFA leave no margin for a bit of good old fashioned common sense. Cnuts like Fabregas will always play on this rule to gain an advantage whilst the viewing public are denied a good even contest. What about NO red cards in the first 15/20 mins for eg - except of course for violent conduct - sick of having games spoilt like this - at least everyone would know where they stood

I like that.
Too many games are ruined by silly sending offs like these.

Nice sentiment but unfortunately it would never work. Would give defenders the excuse to take down players who are clean through and then just claim they mistimed it.

Don't have a problem with boyata being sent off today, it's just the lack of consistency that drives you mad. The foul on tevez against Newcastle was pretty much a carbon copy but only resulted in a yellow. Farcical.

Surely refs can tell the difference - a player clean through the tripped when there´s no chance of retrieving the situation is one thing - a defender clearly going for the ball but missing by a split second is another - you´re bang on about lack of consistency though

Think you're giving refs far too much credit there mate. Most of them have trouble with the basics, never mind asking them to use common sense as well.

Could be wrong, but just think it would leave to more controversy if one week a player is kept on the pitch for mistiming a tackle and then another referee the next week could face a similar situation and have a different interpretation and send the player off.

In general there aren't many sendings off as early as the one today, refs just need to concentrate on applying the rules that are in place in the same way across the board.

One of the most obvious sending offs I've seen. There's also no need to resorting to calling people 'armchair blues' for having a different (and correct) opinion.

Clear red, end of!. Last man and he brought him clean down. Get over it, move on. Soon as Dedrick started getting back up he knew he was going. It happens.

WHAT THE FUCK DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IF I WATCHED IT FROM AN ARMCHAIR, THE BAR STOOL OR AT THE GROUND???. Is that a 'you can't make comment as you don't go' kind of comment???, if so ..... well i won't even rise to your bait, so kindly fuck right off!

I believe the ref had a choice and it would've been a 50/50 flip for any other, but it was Clattenburg, so became a cert. A lot of refs would've taken the timing into consideration (Carling Cup final springs to mind) and also the fact that the player had pushed the ball to far thus not making it a 'clear goal scoring opportunity'.

To be honest, I have no complaints about it but where I have an issue was with Clattenburg's other decisions. Due to the first decision he then had to follow it up with quite a few yellows but then failed to follow up with obvious ones and then decided to pick and choose dependant on the level of response from the players.

To be honest, I don't like him as a ref and feel that there is always something going on behind the scenes. After seeing his opening performance I find myself watching his every move and noticing things that I shouldn't, like when nothing's going on and he puts his hand to his ear and takes some info in; just strange I suppose.

Anyway, onward and upward.

The Future's Bright, and still very much Blue.

But it does make a difference!

At the ground there were thousands of blues giving the ref loads of abuse because we felt wronged, but the general consensus amongst those of you who have seen the incidents 5 or 6 times from different angles and at different speeds is that he got at least 2 of the big decisions right.

I'm not saying that one group's opinions are more valid than the others but it seems pretty obvious that the opinions held seem to be affected by where you watched the match.

Can't understand this thread, a very reasonable red card, no complaints that's footballs rules.

To whinge about it is to be a tool in my humble opinion

Your wrong mate!
He shouldn't make the tackle if he isn't sure of winning it!! He knows the rules, we all know the rules!!

The common sense is try get back at him, let Joe try stop him scoring! Doint bring the guy down through on goal in the 5th minute!

It was a red all day but I agree that a sending off in the fifth minute is going to kill the match, something should be done to prevent things like these. Ok, it wasa red but you can't expect an even competition when one team plays 85 minutes on 90 down to 10 men, there should be a rule preventing sending offs so early in the game. Maybe instead of a red a penalty could be given, even if the foul is outside the box? Today I would have preferred being one goal down after 5 minutes than down to ten men, had we been down 1-0 so early on but with eleven players we would have turned it.

That'd be near every City fan in the ground, the others were still finishing their pints.

What a strange thread this is. Nobody has said that it wasn't a red but several people are bleating on about it being a red and we should accept it!?

It's almost as though some people have replied without bothering to read what has been said and climbing onto their high horses.
