Barcelona agree £125M record sponsorship deal with Quatar for shirt sponsorship.

Goodbye UNICEF

IMHO a sad day.

Needs must where the devil drives.

At least it goes some way to stop this ridiculously saintly Barcelona media image.

But anyway, fair play to Barca for doing it.

I reckon they would not have cashed in unless the new financial rules were not announced. Well done Platini

Could be something to do with Rosell finding they were €450M in debt which Laporta had kept hidden from the members, to be fair.

I can imagine the phone call ...

Quatar Royal Family - "Hello Mr Platini, we understand that one of your biggest clubs is royally fucked for cash right now ... aparently some rinkled old fart could sort something out in relation to a 'vote'?"

Platini - "Putting you through to Mr Blatter now your royal highness..."

The deal includes increased payments to UNICEF so they won't miss out, in fact they still gain and Barca will continue to have UNICEF on their shirts in some capacity. This Qatari oranisation is a not-for-profit company apparently then how come they manage to have 150M quid laying around?

The deal includes the UNICEF logo still being shown on the shirt, and also taking precedence over the Qatar logo, according to the BBC...

Sets an interesting precedent for the shirt sponsorship "going rate" in the context of UEFA Fair Play Regs. I wonder how much Etihad will renew for now?

you read my mind - good for us as so long as we can point to a 'benchmark' then we cannot be accused of being OTT

Not sure whether that was tongue in cheek or not but I don't think you're too wide of the mark.

At last! Someone like me who can't abide the image that Barcelona are some football team sent down by God to spread his message. Just another bunch of greedy fuclers who'll sell to the highest bidders. Not that ther is anything wrong with that.

As people said fair play to them for giving it a go in the first place.

It would've been nice to see FIFA offer some kind of reward/ incentive to teams carrying charity sponsors but then this is FIFA.

Clearly meant for teams wearing charities but I see your point.

Well done Platini.

New rules catch UNICEF with a stray bullet.
