Wolves are favourites to land Michael Johnson on loan as the Manchester City midfielder looks to rescue his career.

The 22-year-old will be ready for a first-team return in the New Year after overcoming a cruciate ligament injury that has sidelined him for the past 12 months.

Molineux boss Mick McCarthy has inquired about taking Johnson until the end of the season as he looks to strengthen his squad for the battle against relegation.

City are ready to listen to offers as they look to give Johnson, also being monitored by Leicester boss Sven Goran Eriksson, the games he needs to build his strength and confidence.

Stuart Pearce gave Johnson his England Under-21 debut, but it was under the guidance of Eriksson that the midfieder really made an impact.

City gave Johnson a new five-year contract that will take him to 2013. But after being nursed back to fitness, his injury curse struck again last December.

Johnson is still highly-regarded at Eastlands, but City’s strength in midfield means it will be difficult for Johnson to force his way back.

That has opened the door for McCarthy, although Wolves will have to pay the bulk of Johnson’s £30,000-a-week contract.

Would be good for him if he could get in at a Premier League club.

I've been wanting them to loan him, but does it have to be for the rest of the season? If he gets fit and playing back to his best, he could be important for us in the run in. If it's possible under the rules, I'd like to see him go till the end of March, so that we would have him for the last 10 games or so, when, if cup competitions go to plan, could be coming thick and fast.

Vey good news for both City and MJ. I still hope that we will get to see him fully fit and rampaging through the middle of the park again in a City shirt

I'm allowed to hope

I think it would do him more good to be under the wing of Sven in a winning team to build his confidence up rather than playing in a team who are going down under McCarthy.

Agree....I'd also trust Sven more to use him more sensibly, not overexpose/stretch him and also not to try and turn his head with the promise of guaranteed first team football

In theory the Sven link up sounds good, but i would be worried that MJ wouldn't be pushed enough out of his comfort zone with Sven. Not sure Wolves is best iether, but he will have to battle there and that ultimately could be good for his all round game.
