Liverpool - Look on ye mighty and despair!

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Liverpool - Look on ye mighty and despair!

Postby john@staustell » Thu Dec 30, 2010 8:06 am

Shelley's poem about the great king Ozymandias (Ramses II in Egyptian), reduced to a statue of broken rubble by time, seems pretty apt, especially when you consider Pepe Reina's quote from 18 months ago! By the way, is Woy being sacked this morning?

Anfield (oops, Ozymandias)

by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away

Pepe Reina blasts Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez

PEPE REINA has hit out at Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez for snubbing Liverpool and opting for the riches on offer at Manchester City.

The Spanish keeper was a key part of the Reds side that finished just four points below Manchester United in the club's best Premier League season for years.

But instead of adding to the squad over the summer, Reina has so far seen two transfer targets turn down the chance of a move to Anfield and could also see team-mates like Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano leave Liverpool in search of moves abroad.

Barry looked a certainty to arrive on Merseyside in the close season after missing out on a move from Aston Villa 12 months ago.

But City seized the opportunity to snatch the player by offering him £120,000 a week before Liverpool had a chance to put in place the finance to sign him.

Tevez has been offered £140,000 a week to move to Eastlands after failing to agree a deal to extend his career at Old Trafford.

Liverpool also thought they were in pole position to land the Argentine by offering him Champions League football. Instead, the pair look to have chosen the money available at City. And Reina believes they should have prioritised their prospects of achievement above their wages.

He said: "Apparently, they moved for the money. That is their decision but I also think it is their problem if they cannot see that Liverpool is a bigger club.

"It's up to them what they do but let me tell them that I am very proud to play for Liverpool. We can offer European football and I think that should have been a consideration for them.

"Everybody knows what it is to play for Liverpool. It's a pleasure and a tremendous honour. I am surprised they didn't consider these things. Some things in a player's career should be more important than money."

...................................................

Even so, Reina, 26, insists Liverpool will be strong enough come the start of the season.

He said: "At Liverpool, you have to be fighting for the title and that's what we will be doing this year.

"We are involved in four competitions and just targeting one of them is not enough. The big one of the Premier League would definitely be best.

Their fans are just comical at the moment with the comments they come out with. They think its the end of the world. Would love to see how many of these fans would turn up if they ever got relegated. I doubt they'd get 25,000 through the door.

It's finally dawning on a few of them though that they are finished as a top club regardless of the investment the new owners will invest. Gerrard, Torres and Reina are their only real talents, one is badly out of form and in decline, one looks like he's gonna top himself with serial depression and the other is a keeper.

They need £150million plus to even think about competing for the league.

The time has come for Liverpool where fighting for a Europa League place will be classed as a successful season. I watched that team last night and there is not a single player on the pitch or even on the bench that would get anywhere near Man City's starting eleven.
Their best players: Gerrard is 31 years old and is in decline and Torres quite clearly doesn't want to be there whatsoever. The rest of the team are very average at best. Kyriagkos is shite along with Lucas & Mireles and Johnson at RB is never an international player imo and the LB who used to lay for Fulham is a joke.
Skrtel & Agger, when he's fit, may get a trial at City but the rest are welcome to stay with the sinking ship, especially Reina.

I love Roy Hodgson tbh

"I'm getting used to the negativity. Kenny [Dalglish] was a rival for the job and it was given to me. He's a Liverpool legend.

"But I don't like it. It's the Kop's way of showing they are not happy with what the team is doing. We've had to live with negativity ever since I came here.

"The famous Anfield support has not really been there – there were problems with the owners and they have been singing for Kenny.

"I can only hope these 'fans' become 'supporters' as well because this is a time when the club needs support.

Yep - just when you need to try and win over the fans, send them apoplectic with rage!

Funny I had a literary mind quote me the same poem when I mentioned that my favorite
piece was The Broken Tower, by Hart Crane.

But in this case, I will take the latter. Suck it 'Pool!!

P.S. Hart Crane rules BTW.

Let's hope for Ozymandias II 'The Bacon Face" next season.

The writing was on the wall when all and sundry took Joe Cole to be their Messiah four or five months back. How an out-of-form Chelsea reject was meant to turn them into title contenders I'm not sure.

Liverpool's pre-match press conference due today has been moved to tomorrow morning.

Scouse fans are freaking out at losing a game at home.

When your a mid table team, you lose games at home fairly often, they need to get use to it.

Im 99% certain that if Kenny Dalgliesh had become manager, they would be in the relegation zone right now.

Roy got them moving in the right direction just a few weeks ago, there form was becoming worryingly good. They dont play for fucking ages then they lose 1 match and its the end of the world.

Fuck off Liverpool

He was a 'world class player' in the media before he joined City, and while he could potentially still join Scum or Chelsea. Then when he joined City he temporarily became an expensive nobody, until recently when they grudgingly admit we have a(nother) world class player in our team.

As people have said here before, after putting up with 30+ years of smugness from Scum and the Dippers, they are going to get it with both barrels, every week, when circumstances allow!

he's right tho...i kinda feel badly for him. He's had the deck stacked against him, and not having the foresight to see that might be hubris, but...Liverpool as a club, and as fans..seem to have been courting failure the last 18 months. They WANT it...and they are getting it in spades. And their players are delivering on that desire. Interesting.
