Milner

Are there signs that Milner is improving and finally starting to find his feet?

Mancini thought he was one of our best players v Toon. I thought he played well v Blackpool and linked well with Zabba down the flank. Tevez should have scored from his cross/pass that would have put him on highest number of assists in the team.

I know a lot are not impressed with him, but is he finally settling down?

I am impressed by his workrate and his technical skill, where he has been let down is his square peg/round hole nature of his role in our attacking formation, he doesn't seem to fit in out wide or in the middle and I wonder if this is an adaptation thing or maybe we have just bought the wrong player for the role we need him to play.

I am hoping that in the next couple of seasons he takes over from Barry as our balanced forward and back midfielder but at this point Barry is playing so well it's hard to see him slowing down(metaphorically) in the next two years.

However we have five quality midfielders for 3 positions and should a long term injury hit(knock on wood) then he can step into the breach quite easily, as we know French Pat isn't going to be able to slot in for a long term haul.

Regardless of the current injuries i would have had Milner as a cert by Bobby to play v Arse. This could be his game and i hope he is able to just relax and enjoy it and not think of Dazby.

He's solid without being spectacular, and was bound to take a while to settle. Having as good a game as he did against Liverpool maybe falsely raised expectations a tad, thinking he would just plough on in that vein without needing any adjustment.

Loved his defensive work against Blackpool, he snuffed out their right winger who was having a lot of joy down that side. Milner also showed good attacking intent, and when he's on form his crossing is amongst the best we have.

He's also good for team bonding - his jaw's so sharp that the other players actually use it to shave their own faces before matches.

hmmmm

Slim has it bang on.

I'd rather Sweep though. Sweep tests defences. This guy just makes em work a little bit before they get the ball off him. As long as the defender is patient, they normally do.

I too thought he played really well when he came on v Blackpool.. worked well with Zabba and then when he got chances to support Tevez he did just that unselfishly.. as mentioned he has the highest num of assists and as his cut back to Tevez showed he gets his head up and picks out a player instead of just slamming it across the box in hope.
I think he has been affected by the price tag on him and has been trying too hard.. but seems to be settling down recently.
He has to be due a goal soon too.. usually good for about 6 or 7 a season.

Yeah, he's beginning to find his feet, although to be fair to the lad he wasn't getting too many opportunities in the first few months of the season.
Obviously he's no Silva but I think he could really make his mark at GoonerLand, especially if given a more central role.

Me, also
And the key with him is that he won't be rattled by the Gooner cheaters and divers.
Like our other ex-Villain, he's a good, decent honest pro.

I caught the last 20 mins of the Arse game. I saw him receive the ball 4 times. He sucessfully completed 1 pass. The other 3 he was dispossessed.

Must work much much harder.

Hard work's great in a factory pal. Skills pay the bills in football and for me he just aint got them for what we need.

He has been a big dissapointment for me, yeah he might come good, but I just don't see what we get from him at the moment.

If there ever was a player that didn't need time to settle in, it's Superjaw. He's got experience in the prem, experience changing clubs and experience in his position.

But he does not have experience of playing with this group of players, experience of the tactics Mancini uses, experience of being used in rotation, and also went to the World Cup, which I think has significantly affected him this year.

He's a good player who has lots of experience for his age, he will settle in and he'll be good for us when he does.

The problem is none of them did really yet only a few are sticking out like a sore thumb, Milner is one, not the worst though. Jo and Jerome take that win.

I just fail to see why players are allowed to adjust from the starting 11, when we have ones better suited on the bench.

Then again were 2nd so what do I know?

I missed this earlier but this is bang on. Glad someone else dares to say it. At this stage Milner is playing because he is 'the new kid in town'. It has become fashionable to dis SWP for whatever reasons but he is and always was a quality player who can stretch defences with best of them.

Milner might turn out to be good player for us over the time if the way he played against Newcastle becomes the norm. At this stage he is more hype than production though. And that's a FACT.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I could say the same thing about David Silva. He's doing ok. If you remember The Jaw's final game for Villa he had a stormer, first game for us, had a stormer. Been average since.

Milner isn't a winger though, he'd be better for us with a run of games in the centre, although it's tough to get into that position at the moment.

I honestly don't think SWP would do any better. He's been almost terrible ever since he came back with the odd good game. I'll always have fond memories of his first spell here, but the reality is that he's only really good enough for a mid-table team at best now.

Yeah but he's been terrible because we're all expecting him to go on them amazing runs and score wonder goals like he used to.

At this stage I still think his 1 in 5 chance of beating his man is better than milners turn back around and go backwards approach. SWP will work bloody hard if asked to as well.
