I've been so busy either laughing or fuming about every negative "City are ruining football" with our "vulgar" spending that I've never really given it much thought, but surely the best way of combatting these taunts from lazy journos and ignorant fans is to ask what way would they suggest we should build the most successful club in the world?

Is it to plow money only into our academy and HOPE that in 15 or 20 years we can begin to compete at the highest level?

Because that's what they're getting at IMO and it makes absolutely no sense.

How do you turn the richest club in the world into the most successful?

Has anyone any sensible answers they think the likes of these people would come up with if directly asked? I've been racking my brain and I think the ONLY way to do it is the way we are doing it?

The way we are doing it is fine with me. Every other club would do it the same way given our starting out point.

We've just caught up, we wont see another £100million summer spree again.

One or 2 players a year, with plenty of international youth players, most of whom we probably wont get to see in the first team

The thing that's obscene is not the actual fact that City have spent the money they have, but the fact that they HAD to spend so much in order to compete with the, now defunct, Sky4 cartel in order to make the Premiership more competetive. It's also obscene that the aforementioned cartel had such a financial stranglehold in the first place.

this is what i say to fans of other clubs who i have spoke to over the last year or so who have been slagging us. ie ipswich,leeds,liverpool,bolton,blackburn...yes ...fucking blackburn (who actually bought the league a while back) etc etc
ok so if your club was taken over by one of the richest people in the world what would you want them to do?

i tended to get a lot of umming and ahhing but nothing that made much sense

Great thread, fantastic question. Wite to the papers with it, seriously. I'd love to see if they answered.

If you tactfully alluded to through the right contacts you might find that bribery is a good answer. We'd be the greatest club in football if only we gave some of that money we're wasting on overpaid footballers to pundits and journalists.
