Was thinking about Neil young on Sunday and brought this question to mind. Nellie was a good player but not quite good enough to play for England.
I always thought that Alan Oakes was unlucky never to be capped.
Others?

Are we restricted to England? I always thought that Distin might have been given a chance for France at the height of his powers, but he was obvioulsly competing with some great players at the time.

I know it may be the blue tints, but given the problems we've had in that area, I always thought Weaver was close to getting a call.

UWE....I remember there was talk of him getting into the German team (following re-unification) for Euro 96 qualifiers.
He does have 6 East germany Caps however, so take my point however you like it.

He's been capped, so apologies for it not really fitting the subject of the thread, but I really believe that Argentina would have done much better at the World Cup if Pablo had been brought along.

Did Mike Doyle ever play for England? Or Tommy Booth? Or Gary Owen?

I think that Trautmann was studiedly ignored by the German team because he did not play in Germany. I remember he was asked to captain an English league side, as a recognition of his services.

Coton should have, he got England B caps loads as I remember.
It always really irritated me that Colin Hendry didn't get capped when he played for us. Seemed he had to leave to get called up.
'Buster' Phillips?

Yes.
From Wiki :
Though recognised as one of the leading goalkeepers of his era, he never played for his native country. Trautmann met with German national coach Sepp Herberger in 1953, who explained that travel and political implications prevented him from selecting a player who was not readily available, and that he could only consider including Trautmann if he was playing in a German league.[45] Consequently, Trautmann's international isolation prevented him from playing in the 1954 World Cup, in which his countrymen were victorious. Trautmann's only experience of international football came in 1960, when the Football League decided to include non-English players to represent the Football League in representative matches for the first time. Trautmann captained the League against the Irish League, and also played against the Italian League.

I was always annoyed Anelka didn't get a call up when played for us.
Although not always his biggest fan, Ned should have been worth a call up by now
