Rattling The Old Onion Bag

Postby Typical City » Tue Jan 18, 2011 6:29 pm

After watching some old 80's and 90's football on ESPN classic recently it suddenly dawned on me how much more interesting it made football when every team had different characteristic goal nets. From Chelsea's massive ones with the stantions like the ones at Wembley, to liverpools red one hanging off the stantions, Southampton and Tottenhams really tight ones and Lutons really baggy one that took a good rattle. To me the regulation style nets we have at almost every ground now are just another sign of how our game has become a little more boring by regulation. Or am I just a bit mad?! Anyone got any goal net stories?

It's not just me then.
I used to like Blackpool's nets for some reason. Whereas West Ham's and QPR's always irritated me because the ball never stayed in them but bounced back out as they were so tiny.
Another thing that always occurs to me when I see old footage, is what happened to the semi circular cut away sections in the stands behind each goal at Goodison?
City and sniffing knickers.
Come on Blues.

The nets at the WC in Mexico in 86...massive. Went back yards from the goal line. Awesome nettage.

Best ever nets...let's see:

1. Wembley, from the 60's through to when they went all boring, the ones with stantions.

2. Azteca Stadium 1970, the one that Carlos Alberto thrashed that great goal into. All baggy, kind of exploded went the ball was smashed in. Best goal ever, for me.

3. Olympic Stadium Rome, EC Final, Liverpool v Borussia Monchengladbach. Like velvet curtains. Lovely.

Not just you mate, it's football, therefore it's interesting.
After the ball was centred, after the whistle blew...
