8th January 1995 - Notts Co away, FA Cup

Ok who was there?

Seems like a good time to bring this up. I remember driving up to Nottingham with my eldest, then 7, now 23! We got up early and joined in a pubful of blues. As usual there were hordes of us although we were of course pretty shite at the time (but the worst was yet to come). Total attendance was 12,376. There was some sort of army surplus (bullets and stuff) in the land behind the away end, fascinating for a 7 yr-old! The other memorable event was two blues near us having a punch-up during the warm-up (we were directly behind the goal) when one shouted at Dibble that he was crap (understandably) and the other threatened to shoot him for undermining our players. Or rather, he had a mate that would shoot him, apparently!!

I seem to remember we went 2-0 down by half-time but the day was rescued by Sky pundit Peter Beagrie and the much-maligned (and rightly so) David Brightwell - to the shock of all.

A nice 5-2 demolition of County in the replay (Rosler 4, Gaudino 1) was followed by a Coton-inspired lucky 1-0 win over a good Villa side in round 4 at Maine Road, before 'typical City' round 5 disaster struck at St James Park in a live TV game when we were cheated by the ref as I recall. I cant quite remember how, but I'm sure Dibble was heavily involved too.

For those who live in the rose-tinted past, the attendance for the City-County replay at Maine Road was:

14,261

Yep, I was there. Dave Brightwell walking into the crowd after scoring. A great City moment. You just can't beat a last minute equaliser in the Cup. Perhaps some folk enjoy a last minute winner but not me; the equaliser, getting something when you had nothing, is a much better feeling.

We were wank in the first half of that game but a lot better in the second. Similar to the 2-3 defeat at Notts County in the promotion season under Billy McNeill in fact. Three times I've been to Notts County and I have yet to see us win there. Can't quite make it this time though.

Oh yeah. And I was at the replay too.

I was there. Right in the line of the piledriver than hit the underside of the bar (brightwell or hendry, possibly) and then the scramble. David White must have had 5 one on one's and screwed them all up. Awful day, stupid loss. Paul Cherry, their 'keeper, was superb, iirc.

From memory for the 2-2 draw tie, we went a goal down, equalised pretty soon after through Peter Beagie who did his acrobatic act, and then went 2-1 down again before half-time.

Remember going in The Aviary Pub beforehand and we had a guy in our group who looked a bit like Gaudino, so the whole pub ended up singing the Gaudino song to him - class.

You thinking of the 1991 one? City fans could be forgiven that Cherry was the best keeper in the world based on his performances against us.
