Transfer window

Right lads. Should we hold our nerve or is it time to act? We have an injury to our best wide man which could keep him out for weeks, heaven knows what will come of Balotelli leaving us potentially with only two strikers for the run in, we've looked dodgy at the back in the air, the right back position isn't exactly nailed down and we look short of ideas when Silva isn't playing or firing.

Option One. Don't panic FFS. Balotelli's a really good player and will be back in three weeks meanwhile Dzeko and Tevez will do the business. Guidetti's there as an option too. Keep SWP for this season and maybe give McDermott a run. Mancini will sort out the zonal defence and we've already got three right backs FFS. Milner has shown he's at his best in central midfield; give him a chance.

Option Two. Hijack the Luiz deal. he's one of the very best young defenders in the world and can play anywhere across the back four. Why would we let Chelsea get him? Or get Van der Wiel or even Alves in to give us the dynamic right back our style requires. Get moving Marwood.

Option Three SWP and Mcdermott are no substitutes for AJ. We must have wide options in case the overlapping full backs don't fire. Elia from Hamburg. Kranjcar from Tottenham. Get one of them in.

Option Four. Let Chelsea get Torres; are you kidding? Pay the £50 million reserve price and have done with it. Heaven knows what will happen to Tevez/ Balotelli in the close season. We can't afford to lose him.

Choose Option One and you're a cool cat. Choosing all of options two, three and four means you're in total panic mode!

Get it wrong and we'll miss out on the Champion's League and Mancini will get the tin tack.

My priority would be a wide player; Elia could be excellent and would give us the option of playing two really good wingers once AJ's back. Buying Torres would leave us very overloaded with top strikers in the short term even if we might really want him next season. I'd have loved Luiz but it ain't gonna happen. A right back can wait till next season.

Why didn't you just post "option one" and tell us that's what we need to do?

Now this is panic mode. We won't miss the CL this season, I am confident that there's no chance of that happening, whatever we do on the market.

This said, I'm all for getting talented playhers in when there's a chance to...but out of the options you proposed I'd just go with hijacking the Luiz deal; if we get Elia or Kranjcar in, when AJ is back we are left with one of them unhappy because of lack of playing time. Same, on a bigger scale of course, if we spend 50m for Torres just after signing Dzeko for 27m; who do we leave out when everyone's fit? Someone out of Tevez, Balotelli, Dzeko and Torres would surely throw the toys out of the pram if they didn't feature regularly, and can you see us fitting all four of them in? In a crazy, Football Manager world maybe yes, Balo on one wing, Tevez on the other, Dzeko and Torres in the middle; fuck me, that would be a scary striking force to deal with!! ;)

I don't think we need to sign anyone at the moment - just need to try a bit of training on things like stopping crosses coming in or even dealing with them when they arrive, rather than looking like a squad of Subbuteo players.

As for Luiz/Alves/Torres etc. If we really want any of them, make sure the selling club knows that and that we'll be back in summer with a tanker full of oil cash. That stops them going to Chelsea now without us having to buy players we don't yet want/need. regardless of what the players might want, a selling club can hold out for a few days, knowing they'll get more in summer, plus the services of the player for another few months.

Original Dub. I tried to argue the case provocatively for all the options. Staying cool and doing nothing may turn out fine or may turn out to be a disastrous misjudgement. That's what Mancini/Marwood/Cooke have to decide right now. I don't actually agree with Option 1. Unless the scan on AJ is very reassuring I'd get someone in. He's our best man off the bench to turn things round in a match. I think we need to replace him with someone who would fit into our plans once AJ comes back. Having the option of playing two really good wide players if the situation calls for it would be great in my opinion. Overlapping full backs are fine and before Dzeko came low crosses to the likes of Tevez were the order of the day. However we really need some high crosses as well now to exploit Dzeko's excellence in the air.

Guillem Balague, who to be honest I've never heard, but apparently is a respected journalist, says that Torres is open to leaving, and wants Liverpool to keep negotiating with Chelsea.

He also said there wasn't a hope Robinho would sign for us a half an hour before it was confirmed.

Oh and he said Rooney had a pre contract arrangement with us.

He is just another fucking know nothing mate.

To be fair, he used to be spot on with his La Liga stuff but his strike rate in past few years has been horrible.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Yep, not sure what he's done to generate the status he seems to carry. Pretty much every time I've heard him chiming in about something in the last year or two, he's been wrong.

It's always tricky with this itk business. Whether there is something going on or not is imo the only interesting thing you can take out of it. Will a deal go through in the end? Who the fuck knows.

Would make a decent Silva stand-in (not much of a winger though), but I doubt he'd want to change one bench for another.

Benfica have blown out Chelsea which leaves an opening but there's no sign we're interested. Oh well.
