The Fastest to 50

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

The Fastest to 50

Postby Manx Blue » Tue Feb 08, 2011 11:36 pm

Well almost! It’s more of a guideline!!!...

I was interested in the form of Carlos Tevez and how quickly would hit his 50, and how it may compare to the achievements of our other players. In recent times, Goater, Quinn, White, have all hit the 50, and a little further back Kidd & Tueart.

There are a number of anomalies in this list. I have tried to gather as much information as possible from “Manchester City: A Complete Record”. I got my copy back in the 90’s, and haven’t got anything more up to date! In the book at the front there are notable names, which give total appearances and goals on a year by year basis. However , during each year they detail which player played in which game, but have left any FA or League Cup games out of the totals. Therefore, players may have actually reached their “50” a little bit sooner.

An example of this is Derek Kevan who hit 48 League goals in 67 league games during his tenure. He actually finished with 55 in 77 games, but it’s the goals in Cup’s which are missing. In addition whilst I don’t have info on Shaun Goater, I know he hit 51 in 102. If anyone can appraise me of the game he hit the 50th, I would be grateful. At present Carlos is on 49 goals in 70 appearances (including subs).

Peter Doherty ………… 75
Sandy Turnbull………… 80
Dave Halliday……………81
Tommy Browell…………90
Irvine Thornley…………94
George Wynn……………95
Shaun Goater………….102 (51)
Johnny Hart……………..102
Francis Lee……………….104
Frank Roberts…………. 105
Horace Barnes………….107
Billy Gillespie ……………109
Bill McAdams………….. 110
Colin Barlow …………….110
Billy Meredith ………….112
Fred Tilson ……………….113
Brian Kidd………………... 113
Joe Hayes………………… 115
George Smith………….. 117
Denis Tueart……………. 122
Andrew Black …………..126
Alec Herd …………………126
Bobby Marshall ………..132
Bobby Johnstone…….. 138
Niall Quinn ……………….139
Tommy Johnson ……….139
Colin Bell …………………..153
Eric Brook …………………159
Bill Jones …………………..191
Neil Young ………………..194
David White ……………227
Mike Summerbee ….234
Roy Clarke ………………246
Ernie Toseland ……….264

In addition to this list the following players, participated in games during the war.

Jim Currier 50 goals in 30 games (That is not a typo!!!)
John Boothway 50 in 55.

I think I’ve included everyone with more than 50 goals scored in the list. If I haven’t I apologise, and please let me know. In addition, if there is something more up to date than the book I was using, again, please let me know.

Cheers!...Manx

Tried to make a start on some of that for you Manxies but gave up as it would have taken me days to calculate.

Try the mcfcstats.com site. Excellent source of city stats and info. It hasn't been updated since last season as the guy who ran it, sadly died last year.
Good luck Mate....it'll keep you occupied when you can't sleep after nappy changing duties....:-)

I think I would have enjoyed watching Jim Currier playing for City.

Great stuff, Manx. Thanks.

Did Anelka get 50?

There would have been some complaints about chances he missed or lack of tracking back.

Cheating a bit, as this is the race to 50 goals from starting in the PL, therefore including as a youngster/coming from abroad, but it puts Carlos up there with some pretty impressive company. I would also say his work rate when we haven't got the ball is better than any of those below, so he's more than just a goal poacher.

65 - Andy Cole
66 - Alan Shearer
68 - Ruud van Nistelrooy
72 - Fernando Torres
83 - Kevin Phillips
83 - Thierry Henry
87 - Ian Wright
88 - Robbie Fowler
94 - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
94 - Teddy Sheringham
96 - Les Ferdinand
97 - Matthew Le Tissier
98 - Michael Owen

Still think he'll leave in summer mind and not forgotten his December outburst.

He scored his 50th PL goal in his 102nd PL start. It was the second game of this season against Liverpool.

Brought this up in a recent post. So after today's win, counting Cup appearances, our Apache is the fastest??

BTW Just ordered the Official Manchester Football Club H.O.F book by Gary James and the personal memoir, Once

This is gonna go on and on and on...

I'm at the WHO FUCKING CARES stage now. Its the modern game. Hate the game, not the player. Every other set of fans seem to be able to get over the fact that their star player threw a wobbly. John Terry, Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Wayne Rooney, Fernando Torres, Charlie Adam - will I go on?

Its called player power. It sucks, but its tough shit.

I can only recommend that you and others like you try to put it to one side because he is greatest player I have ever seen to wear the Man City shirt and it would be a real shame if you scorned on him the whole time for something that has now unfortunately become part and parcel of the game of football.

If he scores, I cheer. But I don't clap his name anymore. He's paid to do a job and I expect him to do it to the best of his ability, just like Gary Cook or someone in the shop. He's just an employee as far as I'm concerned. I don't boo and I hope he scores in every game between now and the end of the season (especially as I think we've never lost a game in which he scores), but he'll never hold the affection other players on that list do, or even ones who didn't make it.

Rosler, Goater or Tevez? I know which one I'd want on the pitch, but I know which two I'd like to shake hands with.

And I still think he'll be gone in summer, whether we win the league of finish 5th.

At half time, I'm sure the announcer said if he came on and scored, it'd be 50 in 69. Is that competitive games or eas he just wrong about the number?

And you sound like a raving fucking lunatic that hasn't got a breeze about football in every single WUM post you have ever made on this board.

I am a Tevez fanatic - have been since I first saw him play about 7 years ago. He is my favourite player to ever put on the City shirt. He is the fastest City striker EVER to reach the 50 goal mark and in every game he gives absolutely EVERYTHING he has to win. Thoroughly amazing player. That said, my post was not about how fanatical a fan I am in any way - more about player power in the modern game, but as ever you chose to interpret it like you do with everyone's posts - in a way that suits you.

And you have the nerve to have a dig at me over Carlos Tevez when most of your "contribution" on this board consisted of wanking over Robinho and defending him to the hilt even when he was being a cunt. You even defended him against the club.

Get a fucking grip old man.

And for fuck sake, how do you manage to fuck up pressing the "quote" button EVERY FUCKING TIME??!

Going on my most up to date programme (WBA) he had 46 in 69 appearances. He's played against WBA, That lot, Aris and Today. He scored a hat trick against WBA and the one today so that's 50 in 73.

Regardless of whether anyone likes him after the stunt in December, I personally think it's a hell of an achievement, and one that should be savoured by player, club and supporters alike, following all the jibes thrown in our direction by rags.

He pulls on a blue shirt. I support him and the rest in equal measure.

You really are a fickle hypocrite
For somebody who has their favourite player as Carlos why did you have a picture of Yaya and until a few months ago Ireland.
Is it the fact that you can't take being argued or debated with without resorting to name calling and profanites to try and make some banal point thats normally wrong or your opinion.
And despite your fickle ramblings a lot of people don't have the same feelings you have towards Carlos and can see him for what he is.Make as many excuses as you want. Some of us arn't as green and naive as the people you may come across.
And EVERY FUCKING TIME??! is another one of them lies that are you trying to kid people with.
Even if the gist of your post was to highlight the strength of player power the foolishness of your blind brown-nosing towards Carlos was clear and hence my comment .

I'm perfectly calm, its just the way I post you cunt.

I had a picture of Yaya because I'm a fan. In the past, I've had several different favourite City players. SWP, Ireland, Barton, Quinn, Dunne, ROBINHO (did you say something about brown nosing?), Horlock... and many, many more. Is Robinho still your favourite player? By God this club treated him like shit didn't we?

As for the "foolishness of my brown-nosing towards Carlos" - I make no apology for being in awe of the greatest striker I have ever seen at the club I support. I'm very passionate about Manchester City and equally so towards any member of staff (playing or otherwise) that helps to make my club great and will continue to do so until he leaves or stops contributing in a positive manner.

The fact he had a falling out with his employers, resulting in a short term dispute that has now been rectified does not interest me in the least and again I will make no apology for not being in the "I don't feel the same way about him anymore" club. Just like any fan of Terry, Gerrard, Rooney, Fabregas or any other star player that acted up for one reason or another but ended up staying.

No matter how much you wanted to wind me up - lets face it, its what you spend all your time on here doing - why not debate the point I was making instead.

Just to run that point by you again - I believe that unfortunately, it seems to be part and parcel of the modern game that the star players of quite a few top clubs have held the club to ransom for one reason or another. I don't give a shit as long as they continue to contribute to our success.

You obviously don't agree with this. Do tell?

I don't care alot for Carlos Tevez as a person but i'd love another 50, and then another and another and hope he is here to achieve that. He certainly won't be remembered in the same ways as Rosler, Kinkladze for me though but then so what, those who love him and those who don't care for him will be united by the goals he scores that brings us equal happiness.
