CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

As most on here will be well aware, I have always had an interest in the history of Manchester City FC.
My interest in this has been driven by a number of reasons. It started as a kid, in the 1950s, I got fed up of being on the recieving end of jokes and jibes by rags and the feeling that City were in some way inferior made me very angry. Sadly I hadn't much ammunition to fight back and shut them up and sadly, I didn't know anything of City's glorious past to answer the taunts. I realised that the more I knew the better i could give it back.
I found out that City's past was glorious and very interesting, I learned that my Dad, born in 1904 had spent part of his youth at Hyde Road and spoke of his City heroes; such as Goodchild, Meredith, Peter Doherty, Frank Swift and his 1930s city heroes and my interest becaome pmore personal
As time went by and i grew closer to City as my club in the 1960s, I saw my own heroes of those successful trophy winning sides.
I came on here and I noted that City's past is largely unknown and many great club servants have or are becoming lost in the mists of time, as are some of the major events in our club's heritage and I felt something should be done.
I became angry that city seemed apathetic to its own history and made little effort to publicise it.
For quite a while I have considered the possibility of City fans forming a CITY HISTORY SICIETY. I mentioned it on here in the "Manchester Talk" thread and Gary James opined his support for such a City society.
I am interested in how much support ther is out ther and if it could be a viable venture. I am interested in you points of view, any ideas and your thoughts in general.
Thanks

it's not my cup of tea but there's plenty of members of my family who would be very interested in such a thing

I fully understand that this will flick some peoples switches and not others Wooders. But thanks for your thoughts Mate. At this embryonic stage, all input is welcome.
Thanks

What are your plans and how much of a time commitment would you expect / require?
This kind of thing really interests me, but I'd need to know what you'd expect from me as I wouldn't want to say yes and then end up letting anyone down due to other commitments.

I'd be interested John as long as I could fit it around work.

I would definitely be interested John. I love City and I love history so its a bit of a no-brainer really.
Obviously I would need to be able to fit it in my ever so busy schedule.
Once a month, say on a tues/wed/thurs would be ideal, hopefully at a pub near Didsbury, so we could have a drink as well.
Let us know more info John when you find the time.
Cheers, Chris

Would like this kind of thing. Living across the Atlantic makes getting to meetings in the pub after work a bit awkward but it'd be good to hear what people come up with, if there's an on-line newsletter or something. Sad old bugger that I am I recall many happy hours spent in Manchester Central Reference Library looking up microfilmed reports of even older matches. Let me know what you decide to do.

WOW...That is fantastic. Thanks for the support and interest.
Because it has only been a seed of an idea, other than bringing a group of like minded City fans together to clebrate, publicise and possibly research our heritage, I am quite happy to go in the direction that the mass of people want it to go. I am open to any and all ideas at this stage and completely open as to the direction such a Society would go.
My own personal view would be.
1..To publicise that a City History Society is to be formed and to garner interest and gain support.
2...Having gained support, We could then organise a meeting somewhere central and hammer out what form it could take and organise a committee or working party to help run it.
3...Gain the support of the club and work through Supprters groups to gain official recognition. Not in competition with the already established fans groups but in a supportive role.
4...Build a City history website, attempting to cover all aspects of City's past. The ManCitystats site has not been updated since the death of it's owner some time ago. That site still remains a credit to him as probably the best city reference sit. It remains unfinished and as a mark of respect. I would like to ask permission for a City Society to continue the great work that was started. It would serve as a fabulour reference point for us now and future generations.
5...Such a website would allow members from more distant parts to be an integral part of what was happening.
6...Again, dependant on finances, a newsletter to keep members in touch...This could be done via the website only if members preferred.
7...Meetings held at regular intervals to discuss debate and invite players past and present as well as other City personnell
8...Create links with the ex-players group.
There is one project that I would dearly love to see happen and that is a "City Historical Timeline" Including artworks, plaques, a pavement walk of fame and other creative media, tracing our heritage and going round the outside of the ground for the public to see. I would love to be able to ask the club to fund such a project...but as yet, that is just a future dream.
Though I be taling the kick off on here, I would hope that there is input from everywhere. bearing in mind that it is our club not mine. PLEASE FEEL MORE THAN FREE TO ADD YOUR IDEAS...and we'll see where it leads.
Thanks again.

That sounds fantastic and it feels that there will be space for all blues who are interested at all different levels of contribution.
I look forward to hearing about the first meeting and would love to be involved with various aspects of research etc
