Joey Waiting Til Summer.

Newcastle's Joey Barton has decided to not discuss a new deal until the summer according to Alan Pardew.

The 28-year-old only has 18 months left on his contract and was apparently ready to sign earlier this month, with a deal all but agreed.

However, Pardew has revealed that the former Manchester City player is following the example of Spanish defender Jose Enrique and will wait until the summer.

"We have made a decent offer," Pardew said of Barton.

"But it's difficult negotiating with any senior player at this level and I think Joey's view is to perhaps see what happens in the summer.

"I don't want to speak for Joey, but that might be where he's at with it. I want to keep him, and I've made that clear to Mike [Ashley], but that process will probably run until the summer now."

What a guy.

"Thanks for giving an ex con a chance and supporting me. I'll just wait & see if I get a better offer in the summer or if I can squeeze an extra few quid out of you as my contract starts to run down & you get nervous".

to be fair to our pal Joey, it's likely his last deal, and why not see what the market will bring? he's probably one of the better midfielders playing in England now, isn't he?

It's a Roman meritocracy. Earn it every week...that's the name of the game really, isn't it? I don't mind it actually...it's the same way in the NFL here in the states, and it definitely skews to clubs over players for *most* players, but if the game is operating at a highly competitive level then you can't ask for much more.

my point being, i don't mind Joey's alleged lack of gratefulness in this case. He's got to look out for numero uno.

cheers

A few weeks ago he was staying for life. Then they negotiate a deal & now he's suddenly keeping his options open. Sounds familier to me. Wonder what Willie McKay's upto these days?

i hear you...trust me, i do. i just think it's still the right "business" decision for him right now. Honestly, the deal didn't hit their perception of market value, right? i dunno.

i feel like a Joey Barton apologist. Would you have him in our squad over the next month? i think i would as crazy as that sounds given his history with us. Injuries are scaring the shit out of me right now. Tin hat on.

Related, i just remembered when he showed his ass to the fans at Goodison. This made me laff. Thanks Joey.

if i were the toon i wouldn't offer 5 either...at 28 he's got about 3 years at his peak left. i wouldn't offer those extra two years either.

someone may tho...someone more desperate, if that seems possible.

cheers

Barton is an average player who sometimes produces a bit of quality & sometimes produces a diabolical performance imo. I'd die of disappointment if he was playing for us.

Do you feel similar disappointment when Yaya,Barry and Milner take to the field?

From our league,i'd prefer Enrique.Contraeo if we want to take another 'foreign' gamble.

I think we need a core of young British players to gel 100% as a "team",along side Kompany,De Jong etc

To be fair if he wasn't a good footballer Ashley would fuck him off and if he was worth a few million Ashley would sell him in an instant.

Joe's right to keep his options open.

Joey should go to spurs and celebrate the signing at a cigar bar with twitchy.

Oh deary me. That guy could have had it all. Shame it all went to his head (no pun intended).
