Manchester city council bosses have given Manchester City permission to sell the naming rights of their stadium. Currently known as City of Manchester Stadium, The Citizens will be allowed to look for what will be a multi-million pound deal to rename the stadium.

The deal will also help them boost revenues to meet the new UEFA financial fair play criteria. The new rules state that any club playing in Europe need to be breaking even within three years; however the club announced a record loss of £121m.

No sponsorship deal has been made yet for the stadium naming rights.

Not only will the renaming of the stadium benefit the club but it will also benefit the council from any deal made. The club also recently signed a new lease which benefits the council, with City paying a set rate to the council.

Manchester City moved to Eastlands from Maine Road in 2003

Etihad seems the logical solution; but maybe because of the ties with our owners it will be discarded.

Etihad doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and I'm not really comfortable with the stadium having a name that can be changed on financial whims. Look at the great football stadia of the world, they have names that are synonymous with the clubs that play there, and that in itself is worth millions. if we are going to rename it anything, then officially changing it to Eastlands wouldn't be a disaster. Financial fair play or not, we need a home with a good, permanent name that has dignity.

Wouldn't be shocked if the sheikh himself bought it..

I mean what a great way to pump a legit revenue stream into the club each year.

£250 million a year would sort us and keep Platini and his minions off our backs!

I thought there are restrictions about the amount of money that can be pumped to club from the owner/owner's companies ?

If it's about the total sum then it's an issue, but if it's a cap to what every single owner's company can pump into the club that's not a problem, the Sheikh has so many companies (to his name or connected to him through various ties) that if each pump their allowed maximum or even less into the club the total figure will be huge anyway.

They can only sell it off at 'market value' under the fair play rules. There was a report a couple of weeks ago that we were looking at arsenal's model, as that's the level for the uk. However, apparently that's way below what they manage in the US, so expect us to quote those figures.

This is a rare opportunity for a top club, as fewhave had new stadiums, arsenal are possibly unique, at the mo, others being wigan sized clubs or a few in holland

The Allianz Arena, obviously, but apart from that, what has sponsorship ever done for football?

As that stadium's shared, I'm not sure who got what, or was the money used for building it?

Bayern bought 1860 out of their share, so I assume they get all of it.
