Can we get third?

If we win our game in hand over Arsenal we will be closer to them than we will to Spurs. If they lose to Salford at the weekend they will have no chance of winning the league and will have gone 4 games without a win. Their last three games include Stoke (reserves?) the week before the cup final, Villa at home and Fulham away A win and a draw from those three gives them 68 points so we would need 10 points from our last 5 league games!

Normally Arsenal would be favourites but they have hit a bad patch and maybe we could just scrape it with a win at Bolton on the last day of the season.

It would certainly be an incentive for them to keep trying (hopefully)

Stoke need all the points they can get to survive. However, after securing survival, European football will be a priority for them. Therefore, I'd expect it to be more likely they play full strength (or at least super-defensively for a draw) against the Arse, in the hope of having secured enough points to allow a defeat to us in the league.

it is still mathematically possible so we could, we will have to wait and see if we do. The main point is that it is there as a carrot to aim for, as pointed out it is a great incentive.

Of course we can, Arsenal are dropping points all over.

City winning while running flat(as we did last night) is as much an achievement in my book as the semi-final win. Title winning teams back up great wins with grinding out points.

It's the one thing that pisses me off about City fans...their lack of belief that City can succeed and their conviction that some sort of Typical City will kick in and spoil it all. It's as if City have just miraculously appeared in 4th position without having earmed it and Arsenal have some God given divine right to be above us. Abject and utter fuclin nonsense.

Mathmatically, we can finish on 74pts. We are better than all of the teams we have to play and there is no reason why we can't attain that total.
I expect us to beat West Ham on Sunday, I also expect the rags to beat Arsenal. (2pts behind them). Whatever happens between Chelsea v Spurs means one or both has to drop points, so either Chelsea drop closer to us or Spurs virtually drop out.

Next, we have Everton who we also should beat, putting us 1 point ahead of Arsenal (played the same number of games). It is then in our own hands.

Isn't this what we dreamed of for many years?..Except now we have arrived, many City fans are suddenly too frightened to dream any more.

I don't think John is being sanctimonious, I think he lives and exudes the spirit of 1968 when City played without fear and were scared of no-one. We just played all out attack from the first whistle and, although we sometimes badly came a cropper, more often than not we swept other sides away. We were totally irrepressible.

I wish that City were allowed to play like that today.

I think we can get third. I don't think we will - five points is a lot to make up in five games at the top of the table - but it does happen.

Of course he is. I have heard that same rhetoric, and that's all it is, from him now at least half a dozen times and he is so unbelievably dismissive of everyone else's opinion on the subject to the level of deriding fellow blues and calling them 'frightened' and questioning their belief. The unifying term for these deplorable aspects of his post is summed up nicely with the word 'sanctimonious'.

The fact is, it's not in our hands, if Arsenal grind out the necessary points to maintain 3rd then we literally have no chance, however if we can string some results together and they drop points, then 3rd is a possibility. So in a sense he is commentating on City fan's ability to predict the outcome of Arsenal matches and somehow that makes us 'frightened'.

He needs to shut up or change the channel, I voted for 'shut up'.

Slim,
You know and I know that the overwhelming mentality on here over the last couple of years has been one of negativity towards our chances of success. I have never been dismissive of anyone's opinion mate, not when it has some basis of rational thought. Often it is solely based on fear.
The mistaken belief that we never have, so we probaby won't. Stuff like Spurs have always been our bogey team or Everton always beat us. are nonsense. Failure at City has always had reasons, be it bad stewardship of the club, bad management of the team or lack of resources to improve us. Those reasons have gone, they are our past and have no part of what is happening today.
It may be a generation thing but I have never known, nor can I understand this losing mentality when there is no reason for it other than fear.
We are in the FA Cup final because we earned that place and we are sat 4th in the league for the same reason. Arsenal are sat slightly above us because that is their level. Is it sanctimonious to believe that we can improve our level to beyond theirs?

There you go mate...you got the argument you sought...:-)

You are the ultimate hypocrite.

You preach on about patience when it comes to results(the project, the licking, the process), yet while it seems like our optimism is remaining grounded and moving along at a patient stately pace, you bitch and moan that we are not believing enough in this team.

Ummm... That's not hypocritical at all, and is actually quite consistent. We have to have the patience to believe that under the current leadership, this project will come to success. For a long term project to work, you have to have belief in the short term that everything will eventually work out for the best.

Did John steal your toys or interrupt your nap time? You seem like you have a chip on you're shoulder against him. Everyone doesn't have to be as negative and miserable as yourself

Hahahahaha...Well in Slim...but I am sure that even you can find a bigger hypocrite than me...you're just not looking hard enough.

I am NOT bitching and moaning about lack of belief in this team Slim...I am bitching and moaning about the GROUNDLESS lack of belief in this team. I am bitching and moaning at the GROUNDLESS lack of hope that some fans have in our team, where for no reason, other than fear, they continually rubbish our efforts and our aspirations. Where without any rationality, they decide we CAN'T. Where they ALWAYS seem to pick the worst case scenario.
Given reasons for possible failure, I will respect them.

Forgetting the licking..I don't do licking...(not publically anyway). You must understand that the very core of our project, the seed that began this journey...was a dream, backed by imagination. When the Sheik bought this club, he 1st had to dream about where he could take it. It was from that dream that the planning came, the scheduling, the practical stuff that he planned for our future...but first was the dream. grounded by practicality, but a dream nevertheless.

We have had many years of failure and it seems to be deep rooted into the mentality of too many. One of the biggest critiques of the club over recent years has been lack of "winning mentality" that ability to believe in the possibility of success. It seemed hard wired from top to bottom. That has largely changed. New owners, administrators. management and players have been brought in to carry us on to the future...Sadly, though it was time to put the baggage down some time ago...too many fans still haven't woken up to the fact that the reasons for our failures of many years have gone.

We have so many reasons to believe, to enthuse, to dream. We sit 4th, with every chance of 3rd. We have reached our 1st major Cup Final for too many years...

I challenge you Slim...Give me reasons NOT to dream or enthuse...or even fuclin hope.
