The real gulf is in the money from TV rights, is it not?

We would probably make a loss unless we won it, with all the win bonuses the players must be on for qualifying for the CL!

It is indeed the TV rights that will add to the club's account, hence the Europa League still gives you a decent amount.

On the basis of them facts I have no idea why the bigger clubs bother with the europa.

Maximum effort, Minimum reward.

The only teams who win financially are the tin pot league clubs. Waste of time.

It's not just prize money and tv rights either. Advertising will be separate from League and Cup games and I read somewhere that in CL games that are televised live all over the Europe (world?) the advertising money is insane.

Woo big nuts!..

We should set up our own competition and blow Fifa out of the water!
'The MCFC & Abu Dhabi Elite Cup' winners get 50 million and we get first dibs on all entering teams players... oh and the final is ALWAYS played at COMS.

Just saying..

Even the tin pot leagues arent getting to much benifit from it. I remember Celtic got to the final and made less money from that campaign than they did for just qualifying for the CL Group stages the year previous. Madness.

You will see an interesting game between Spurs and Liverpool soon. Both teams will be desperate to lose and finish 6th. I'd much rather have less fixtures and a clear run at the CL next year than compete in a Mickey Mouse tournament.

There you go then. I bet that, by comparison, you get cunt all from being on Channel 5 or ITV4 on a Thursday night, in a match that's probably only being shown in the two countries.

I really don't understand the distaste for the Europa League, I really don't.
It is a serious European competition, a trophy to be won, and any club that claims they cannot manage the fixture congestion it creates must really worry if they actually enter the Champions League. The modern game is all about squad management and if you have players who cannot be trusted to get a result against, say, Standard de Liege, then maybe they are not high enough quality for a side aiming for the Champions League.
As for Spurs and Liverpool not wanting to enter the competition, I really think it is nonsense. If it is an issue of making less money than in the Champions League, then surely it must be worse than not having European football whatsoever. Players considering a move would probably take the presence of European football into account as well.
There can be good money in the Europa League if you show your club's fans you are taking it seriously and generate interest for facing your opponent. If you treat it as a joke, put out C or D sides to face relatively unknown opponents, why should anyone care? If you take it seriously, you can have full houses every round, and make decent money as well.
As for the quality of the football, just like in the Champions League, it really depends on the teams and the significance of the game. Group stages are often dire spectacles, which improve somewhat when teams need results. Some of the best games I have seen this season have been in the Europa League (especially Villarreal and Porto matches).

As for distribution, the Europa League is shown internationally. Here in Canada, we get two or three matches broadcast. One live, one delayed.

Clear evidence of the disparity is on this board. Both CL games get a thread going. Yet I'm sure both of the Europa matches last night would have been quit exciting yet no thread.

Well done Braga BTW.

I watched the Braga game, it was a really good game, not much good football but there were a few chances and it was gripping viewing. Crowd went absolutely ballistic at the end, it's their first major european final and they've only ever won one trophy in their entire history.

To be honest, I'd have totally buzzed my tits off if we'd reached the Europa final. Fuck prestige bla bla bla - I want us to win [strike]all[/strike] any of the trophies.

I didn't see Liverpool embarrassed to win the UEFA in 2001, nor did Arsenal or Chelsea see the ECWC as being below their ambitions in the 90s. All trophies are mega, and we need to get hungrier for them.

I was delighted when Birmingham won the LC, but I envied them too.

Sure, but financially it's worth about as much to the club a our good FA Cup run, it's nowhere close to what the CL can generate, even if we finish mid-table at the group stage and don't progress to the knockout stages.
