Elite Players-Managers

Postby CitizenYank » Wed May 18, 2011 1:24 am

With the return of King Kenny to Liverpool and the success Sir Roberto has been having with City, a question
has popped into my head: How many successful players at elite level clubs have also gone on to have similar
success managing at the highest level of play? (Either club or country is fine)

Here are a few from my own limited sports knowledge: (Wikipedia)

[Including the above]

Franz Beckenbauer: Bayern-Munich (Bundeslegia) 1994 (UEFA Cup) 1996 West Germany (WC) 1990

Johan Cryuff: Ajax (KNVB Cup) 1986, 1987 (UEFA Cup Winner's Cup) 1987

Barcelona (La Liga) 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 European Cup: 1992

(Although Mancini didn't feature in as much international competition as the others: I doubt this was because of his lack of talent. more an unfortunate run-in with national team politics.) Remember if a player repeats his elite level of success coaching for high club play or at international level, that is all I am looking for.

Dunga? Hardly had success as a manager.

True enough - for some reason I was thinking he'd managed a world cup winning team - he only skippered one :-D

Was going to add Ancellotti myself until i read again that it was an elite player, otherwise you could add Rikyard in there aswell.

One that always amazed me is Brian Clough, what a record he had as a goalscorer, his success as manager overshadowed his stunning career that was cut short by injury.

Steve Bruce
Berbatov wins golden boot, spends following season on the bench while his team loses title on goal difference. Well played, Fergie.

He did well at Swindon too. In fact when I've seen him on telly lately he talks sound, common sense.

It just went a bit wrong with England, Gazza and all that Eileen Drury nonsense.

With regard to the Hoddle issue, it wasn't football reasons that caused him to lose the England job.
For whatever reason, it was the media that dictated what happened to Hoddle.
...and for the record, his spiritual beliefs were well known and had been reported quite non judgementally, on many occasions previously. The media just chose the time and the vehemence to have him hanged, drawn and ridiculed.
