I'm hoping the rags don't spend big and will have to join the relegation battle next season.

Friedel has gone to spurs.

He conceded 59 goals last season. Doubt he is going to be there number 1 next season. Another keeper to come for spurs i think.

With all the old timers that Twitcher seems to be always interested in, Spurs will soon be a veritable Dad's Army.

Long term planning doesn't seem to feature in his calculations; he'll be trying to buy Giggs next.

Yeah but much like VDS he was still playing really well last season. He's very reliable, and goalkeepers are an exception to the rule age wise. He's hardly a risk - he's on a one year deal - he could force the very error prone Gomes to pull his finger out. It's a good signing imo. He'll start as number one and do a good job.

Friedel is excellent keeper. Been among the top 5 keepers in the league consistently for the past 10 years. In fact, if Given goes we could've done worse than Friedel for a backup. Although I still hope we go after Westwood heavy.

This is exactly how you build a team that will go down immediately and probably in debt as well. Goes to show how so many teams that are promoted by surprise underestimate Premier League so badly. They got this school of thought that "there's tons of players in lower leagues who'd be fine performers in top flight". That WAS the case twenty years ago but that's not how it works these days. There are couple of young talents who with bit of grooming can be good players in top flight but there are no players who will immediately carry your team in Premier League.

Danny Graham is one in every three striker in lower leagues who had fine (not great but fine) season in Championship. He'll be eaten alive by Premier League defenders. For that money they could've got some decent value from Europe though.

There's two ways to do it imo. Either go Blackpool and hope for the best with the players you have got and if you go down, you will still be in muc much better shape than when you came up. OR spend HUGE and in one summer try to build core of team that is capable of challenging in bottom half of Premier League. Latter is HUGE risk/huge reward kind of scenario where you might be able to stabilise yourself as Premier League team for some time.

The filth have apparently signed Phil Jones and Liverpool Jordan Henderson

Manchester United have won the race to sign Blackburn's England under-21 defender Phil Jones in a deal understood to be worth £16m.

The centre-back, 19, will undergo medical tests at United's training ground before signing a five-year contract.

Jones, who made his Premier League debut in March last year, played 28 times last season despite being hampered by injuries, and is part of England's European Under-21 Championship squad.

He signed a five-year deal at Ewood Park in February, but that included a release clause setting his value at £16m. He had been linked with both Liverpool and Arsenal before opting to join United.

Liverpool and Sunderland have agreed a deal for Jordan Henderson to move to Anfield. The midfielder will undergo a medical on Merseyside on Wednesday ahead of a £20m transfer that involves David Ngog heading to the Stadium of Light as a makeweight.

Henderson will become Kenny Dalglish's first signing of the summer, with no problems anticipated over his medical – the 20-year-old is due to join Stuart Pearce's England squad ahead of the European Under-21s Championship on Wednesday – or personal terms.

Ngog, who barely featured for Liverpool once Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson as manager in January, may be valued at up to £7m, providing he passes a medical and agrees terms on Wearside.

A Liverpool statement read: "Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson. The 20-year-old will today discuss personal terms and undergo a medical on Merseyside after a fee was agreed between the two clubs."

Sunderland were reluctant to sell the homegrown talent – who has won one full England cap, against France in November – but accepted Liverpool's £20m package was impossible to reject for a player who was also keen on the move. Manchester United had been linked with Henderson last season but were not in the market at £20m.

"A fee has been agreed with Liverpool for Jordan Henderson and he travels to Anfield today with the club's blessing," read a statement from Sunderland.
