Would have put this in the daily bollox, or even the Fergie loves Joey thread but couldn't resist writing the headline.

Newcastle United‘s Joey Barton has turned down interest from champions Manchester United, confirming he will stay at St James’ Park.Barton, who did not go on the pre-season tour of the United States as he could not get a visa – has confirmed his commitment to Alan Pardew’s side for the 2010-11 season, but added that the campaign would likely be his last for the Novacastrian outfit.

Using social networking tool Twitter, Barton confirmed he had received interest from Old Trafford, but said he would see out the final year of his contract – which manager Pardew has failed to renew.

“Nice to be linked with some big clubs but I honestly don’t want to leave Newcastle. Thanks but no thanks,” Barton tweeted.

“I will most likely leave Newcastle at end of season, when my contract expires and I am no longer employed. It’s out of my hands.”

Barton is not unknown to the city of Manchester, having lived there for 10 years while playing for Manchester City – five years as a youth player, and five years in the senior squad.

Pardew left the door open to re-sign the 28-year-old following their English Premier League campaign.

“I think Joey will be here (for the 2012-13 season). He’s said all along he wants to stay and I want him to stay so there’s no conflict,” he told The Sun newspaper.

“His contract may get resolved but probably not until it runs out.”

“But if he has another season (in 2011-12) like the last one then he’ll be in the front seat, which is where he wants to be.”

I think it's very noble and altruistic of him to want to stay and help Newcastle, even though he wont get a new contract. The fact that he will be able to negotiate a massive mega-contract with someone next summer is of course irrelevant.

He needs to stay out of jail for a whole year in order to do that ...

What a dickhead, I'd loved to have seen him try and shine in scums team, he'd be bossing Rooney about and Giggs, whilst playing totally shit himself. Causing all sorts of unsettling shit.

Would have been hilarious.

So he's just confirmed his commitment to Newcastle for last season?

It's very surprising as I wouldn't have thought these two qualities could be ascribed to Barton at all.

I wonder what he's up to and what's in the bottom of his mind; perhaps he's thinking in terms of going to Barcelona in 2012/13 to replace/oust Xavi or Iniesta.

nah mate truth is he would have been terrified of fergie and probably would play really well for them. in strict 'playing the game' terms, i think barton is unreal and we've known for years if someone can harness that temper he could be a great player. ferguson would have relished the challenge.

Joey Barton would have played the best football of his life in Fergie's team, and he's finally not so daft as he used to be. Maybe Barton's story shows how long it's going to be before Balotelli sorts himself out. Just imagine the two together.

Were they looking for a "late challenge" specialist to replace Scholes?

Joey looking for a big payday for a signing on fee next season. Allardyce will be after him for sure.
