Was Dzeko Really That Bad Last Season??

I have just seen in the 'Sweep Gone' Thread that Mase reckons that Dzeko was shite at the end of last season.
This wasn't how I remembered it so I did a bit of research and came up with the following stats:
Dzeko scored 5 goals in the last 20 games of last season - Not too bad and certainly not 'shite'
Of those 20 games he actually played in 15 of them - Making 5 goals from 15 games.
Of those 15 games he only started 9 - Making 5 goals from 9 starts.
Personally I think that's pretty bloody good!

Got isolated and asked to play a role that wasn't really suited.
I will admit I was underwhelmed at some of his efforts.
Might just have been one of those spells that strikers seem to go through every now and then but he looked a club foot at times.

I thought he was ok given the mid season swap of leagues. I could understand the criticism coming in but just dismissed it as the i want it all and i want it now angle. You could see what he was trying to do and was just slightly of the pace.. that probs wasn't helped by trying a bit to hard in order to compensate. You see the same thing with Tevez at the start of each season and Milner has suffered in the same way too.
You always have people who just take what they see rather than look a bit deeper. His body language was ok and he was trying hard from the off so it was always a matter of give him some time to adjust and then see what we have got.

New Team, New league - you can expect these immediate stutters - but as has been said - there wasnt really that much of a stutter. I think the price tag may have had people expecting a more explosive and immediate introduction into the PL, but I'd rather a player start slow and pick his game up like he has done.
Thank fuck we dont have a Fernando Torres on our hands.

nope, just a number of city fans writing off a player before they have even started. happens alot.
i seem to remember tevez getting slated an awful lot when he joined.

I was actually taking the piss mate trying to show how fickle we can be sometimes (Johnson is shit, he's the best dribbler in the league, he's crap and gives the ball away far too much, his runs are brilliant, etc. Sorry.
If you read through my previous posts you'll see I've defended Edin as he was thrown in at the deep end really, kept us in the Cup we eventually won and played from January ONLY, even if Redknapp etc say he had a 'bad first SEASON with us'. All this while being played up front on his own most of the time with balls being thrown over him to run on to.

Sorry if I missed the sarcasm in your post mate. However, plenty of people, including many 'experts' have said that Dezek wasn't very good last season so I think this thread is still worthwhile.

Came from Wolfsburg just after their winter break so wasn't match fit. Took time to sort that out whilst also coming to terms with new surroundings and new team mates. Asked to play an unfamiliar role for much of the time.
Still scored vital goals in our cup run and started to look the part at times.
For too many of our fans there is only good or bad, no grey areas and no patience.

I also think the problem was he didn't make an impact in the prem games. His tally was mostly in cups, and people seized on it. Additionally, last year his first touch at times rivaled that of Jo. I never was slagging him, actually was happy to get him, but I can see where those impatient fans (KK recall my friend Stephen he was all over Dzeko as being useless) would look at the negative.
The irony of it all is how well we are playing right now as a TEAM, while expected, I think it is happening a bit sooner than I would most would have thought (notice I said thought not expected). I can only imagine if we got off to a start with 4 or 6 points from the first three matches how many people would have started a Mancini out thread already.

I thought he had a couple of good games, actually his 1st one filled me with optimism, but on the whole was pretty poor. It was clearly not down to a lack of ability but he was making all the wrong decisions on the ball, not using his body strength well enough, taking too long to get the ball 'out of his feet', finishing badly, not making himself available/shouting for the ball & not working hard enough to get himself into goalscoring positions & his 1st touch was crap. Against Chelsea he was Corradi.
In pre season he still wasn't asking enough for the ball or fighting to get into goalscoring positions in some games, just cruising, but as soon as the team got into gear v Swansea, he changed dramatically & is now getting all those things right & absolutely busting a gut to get into the 6 yard box. Last season however, I'd say he was, on the whole, the least valuable of our available forwards.

He looked like a young guy playing for a new team in a foreign country.
I think he's found his feet remarkably quickly.

Unless you're a freak of nature like Aguero it takes time to get used to a new country - and some people are more sensitive to it than others. He was playing like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders in some games last season and his performances reflected it - even so he wasn't doing as badly as some were trying to make out.

As recently as pre season some people were bemoaning the loss of Bellamy and Adebayor as they were 'better players' than Dzeko.
Written off far too quickly by some and whilst he didn't exactly impress in his first few months, his performances were not nearly as bad as made out.
Glad to see him silence his critics. Will score a barrel load for us.

They were better players than Deko & Balotelli were last season & it was a mistake not to use them. We got away with it was a big risk & not just down to lack of form; a couple of injuries or red cards could have resulted in Jo playing the last 5 games. Unneccessary gambling.

In a word YES.
He was garbage, slow,no awareness,no pace, first touch of a rapist. yadda yadda.
Amazing what a bit of confidence and a full pre season can do. I'm impressed and I reckon hell start tomorrow.
