Maybe this Champions League business isn't all the attraction the media brainwash us into thinking it is?

This attendance figure is similar to our Europa Lge one's last season. In defence of Chelsea fans i think alot of it has to do with extortionate ticket prices they are paying.

I think the TV companies paying millions to show the matches indicates why the attendance at the ground is poor.
Its a case of people watching some of the best players in the world for a price that is somewhat less than going to the ground.
It seems to me the fact that it has so much TV coverage is gonna make the matchday attendances less and less.
I think it is a TV event.
Something that has a global audience and can be seen in the comfort of ones house is what is important to the clubs accoutants.
The amount of money the club makes from the "real" fans going to the ground compared to the TV money is not really anything for them to worry about if 10,000 "real" fans less turn up.
I think the plastic gloryhunting armchair fans who pay for it and don't want the matchday "experience" will make sure it continues but I think there will be less and less "real" fans in the future when people realise TV is a very good way of enjoying the show.

My brother inlaw is a life long Chelsea fan (used to watch them home and abroad), before they emigrated he had to stop going to watch their matches several years ago due to being priced out. (he was working as a teacher at the time)

If that's the case then they can drop the admission prices to fill the grounds. Somethig Platini's bent FFP rules are helping prevent.

Not quite correct about the armchair fans paying for it. Every item advertised on TV during the breaks , costs all the customers of that product a percentage for the adverts that pay the royalties to the clubs. So everyone walking around in Adidas and Puma shell suits or what ever ( unless they are riot freebies) is coughing up. Not necessarily the armchair fan. He just pays for his access to the provider. Heineken , Bulmers , what ever all add on Marketing costs for their products.

Still Chelsea could always drop their entrance fees for Children and Parents for example. Isn't there anotherteam that is proactive in this area ?

Here on Spanish TV last night they showed the Barça match and highlights from all the other matches Thats what the clubs made their money so I don't think making the ticket prices cheaper would effect that.
It's not important in the way it will effect the FFP how many people are at the ground.

Chelsea have been in the Champs League for the past 10 years so group games arent the novelty for their fans these days, which probably explains the attendance.

If we are in the Champs League for the next 10 consecutive years, then Id expect our ground not to be full for such games either. Come to think of it, our ground is likely not to be even full for our first Champions League match so we arent in a position to crow about other peoples gates.

According to the Chelsea bloke on Talk Sport - Hawksby or Jacobs, no idea which is which - Chelsea had poor attendances in the CL and dropped their prices loads to remedy it. This year he said they have shot them up again and he said they would suffer accordingly. Seems he was right.

They upped the price by 20 pound for the group games. They are planning a boycott for the next one.

if 10,00 fans not going doesn't make a difference, why don't they just let the other 35,00 in for nothing ?

I know this is probably the worst time to say it as a City fan, but I'm not overly fussed on the competition, and care much, much more about the Prem. I've always seen the CL as an 'armchair supporter' competition- much more popular with people who don't go to matches or people abroad. It's not just me, either, a lot of British people I know that are my age aren't as passionate about the competition as fans from other European countries. I think a large part of the reason is the ban on English clubs and subsequent under-par performances when my generation was growing up and forming its own opinions on the game.

Your probably right there is always a case for making more money.
However I think that unless you are a super big club the money from the CL is a bonus.
Clubs make millions from being in the group stages and the TV that brings with it.Whatever they can do in the ground I think is a bonus, not something that helps pay the bills.
I think being 10000 fans down on something that was extra in the first place is not to detrimental
