Munich, what to do+ to see+ to drink

Postby TomS » Fri Sep 23, 2011 10:06 am

What to do/see:
Museum
If you are into museum, I would visit the Alte Pinakothek (old paintings) or the Neue Pinakothek (modern art) or give the new BMW Museum (near the Olympiastadion) a try, where you could also visit the Olympia area, worth a a walk.
Something for the lady:
Kaufingerstrasse or Maximilianstrasse are the main shopping areas right in the City centre.
Sightseeing:
In town centre the Liebfrauenkirche, Marienplatz and absolutely worth a visit the Viktualienmarkt (market with beerstalls) are all at the same road and within walking distance. A bit outside the town there is the Schloß Nymphenburg with a nice parc.
Citycentre is worth to stroll around, many small roads with independent shops and bars/restaurants.

For a beer:
For a night out Schwabing is the area.
To advice some Beerkellers into town: Augustinerkeller and Paulaners are at the Liebfrauenkirche and the touristic hotspot Hofbräuhaus is on the other side of the townhall (Platzl 7) in a smaller sidestreet. Also many beergardens in every part of town.
Munich is the town where you´ll get your beer in bigger portions. Ein “Halber” is half a liter, a “Maß” is a liter of beer. Ein “Helles” is a lager beer, a “Weizen” is a wheat beer, with some lemonade in it it´s a “Russn”.
Best Local beers are Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr and Hofbräu. I prefer Weizen, but give the Augustiner a try, lovely!
The Beerfest “Oktoberfest” is at Theresienwiese, about 2-3 km behind the mainstation. Beware, you won´t get into a beertent without a reservation, the prices (Maß around 9€) are expensive, many pocket thieves and they close down at 23.00.

To eat:
Bavarian food is something special.....
Local product worth a try is "Obatzer" a cheese cream made out of camembert with onions on fresh bread, a "Weißwurscht", a cooked sausage, eaten with your hands by sucking it with sweet mustard. Or try "Schweinebraten mit Knödeln" a porc dish with potato (don´t know the right word) mixedballs.....

To get to/from the ground
Take the U6 at Marienplatz (Townhall/ 5-600m from main station) direction Garching/Hochbrück, get off the train where all the red/white fitted People get off or at Fröttmaning, then a 10 min walk. Away section is to the right.
The fare is NOT included in the matchday ticket. A day trip ticket for around 10€ might be the best option.

Munich is the law+order capital in Germany. Bavarian police is famous for nick you fir no reason and fees for example for a piss in public are expensive and they control everything….. So my advice, be gentle, do what they tell you and buy tickets for the tube.

Muenchener Freiheit is also a great spot for a crawl and a scoff. I also recommend Maiesel as the best of the Weissbiers I tried there. Be careful in the Irish pubs - they have'nt got a clue how to pour Guiness an they treat it like plzener(!!).

Try schweinhaxen - half a pig on a plate - you won't be able to move for a week.

Brothels are as legal as corner shops in germany, so probably not much.

Can certainly recommend the Hofbrauhaus thanks to Tom's notes when I went there last season. The beer was excellent and the Pork Knuckle will fill you for days. Cant remember the name of the place but there is a bar with a Tree growing inside it thats a top little place - they built the bar around the tree apparently. If you stagger into it you will think you have entered the twighlight zone.

Allow yourself a good 15-20 mins walk from getting out at the train station, to arriving at the turnstile as well. The Ground, because its so big and well lit, looks a lot nearer than it actually takes to get there. There is also a huge stand at the Frottmaning station selling just about every Bayern scarf or souvenir you'd want, and its a lot cheaper than the stuff inside the ground if you are after a Bayern souvenir for any reason.

well, apparently it would be a gay brothel based upon the sausage eating aspect of it. A topic that won't seem unusual to you.

Related, i love Munich...i spent just a week there on business about a decade ago, and it was so fantastic.

The secret highlight was the 15-minute porn "freeview" sample on the hotel TV...i mean, what real man needs more than 15 minutes to take care of business? Not i.

Also, beer.

cheers

TomS is spot on with the recommendations.

Over the years I've worked a lot in München ( or should I say Munich) and it really isn't worth getting caught not paying the small amount for the tickets on the trams and S-bahn. You can even get day tickets.

If you order lager beer or a pilsner, expect to wait a few minutes for it to be poured. It's worth the wait though.

Weisswurst and sauerkraut are staple foods in Munich ( White sausage). However there are some excellent restaurants. Although Bayern food itself, does tend to be 'heavy'.

On the whole the people are very , very friendly and many speak English with little difficulty. However it does help to speak slowly, not with the typical Manc speed and drawl. As always there are acouple of Irish pubs if i remember correclty around the town. If you are wondering what to do when you get there , the Bayern Training facilities are worth a visit. Also the Olympic Park is pleasant.
However,if it's sunny and warm on Tuesday, you perhaps can't beat a visit to the English Gardens, especially if you want to have a wash , cos you can swim in the river running through it . Also expect to see tits and bums there. The Bayern girls love getting their clothes off at every opportunity when it's warm.

I can recommend Franziskaner Weissbeer above the others mentioned, made by the Franziskan Monks close by :-)

If it's a hot day , you might try Kristalweizen Beer which is a clearer Weiss Beer with a sharper taste. Seems more palatable in hot weather.

There is a high pressure zone over the Alps at the moment, not expecting to break before midweek next week. So we should be in luck for Tuesday weatherwise.

By the way, the new Airport at Munich is miles and miles away from the Centre of Munich, so if your flight is late afternoon Tuesday, you might want to consider grouping up and getting a taxi, if running late and even if it is quite expensive. Although there is a regular S-Bahn connection to Munich.

Easy game for bayern yesterday eve, 3-0 vs. leverkusen, one of their expected challengers for the titel.
They are now top of the league with 21-1 goals.....
