Hargreaves could play in derby

Roberto Mancini has raised the spectre of fit-again midfielder Owen Hargreaves facing old club Manchester United at Old Trafford next month.

Three years of simmering resentment at the way Hargreaves' long-term knee injuries were initially handled by the Red Devils medical staff spilled over this week.

In the aftermath of his goalscoring debut in City's Carling Cup win over Birmingham, Hargreaves claimed he felt "like a guinea pig", such were the treatments he was forced to undergo.

To Hargreaves, the whole problem had been exacerbated by injections he was advised to have by United as part of his attempts to combat a tendinitis problem that first came to light in 2007, when he was still at Bayern Munich.

Evidently, Ferguson, and United, are unhappy with the 30-year-old's observations, their staunch rebuttal merely fuelling what was always likely to be a high-octane duel on October 23, which Hargreaves could be at the centre of in more ways than one.

"We have to be calm and think about his body," said Mancini. "If everything is okay in the next two or three weeks, maybe he can play against Manchester United."

TRANSFER GOSSIP

Arsenal may be keeping tabs on Brighton's highly-rated 19-year-old central defender Lewis Dunk.

But.....

Manchester City, Aston Villa and Fulham are also interested in Dunk, with each club considering making an offer in the January transfer window.

The 19 year-old has impressed this season for the Championship high-flyers, and is attracting a host of top flight suitors.

The 6ft 4inch centre-back is now expected to be involved in a heap of January transfer speculation, sparking a bidding war between the three clubs.

Dunk now has 13 appearances under his belt starring for Albion, and may jump at the chance to play for a Premier League side.

Arsenal could sell Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott, Thomas Vermaelen and Andrey Arshavin next summer, rather than risk losing them on free transfers when their contracts expire in 2013.

Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal face major battles to avoid losing another FOUR players next summer.

Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott, Thomas Vermaelen and Andrey Arshavin will all have one year left on their contracts at the end of the current season.

And Gunners boss Wenger may be forced to cash in on them, rather than risk losing the quartet on free transfers.

Arsenal opted to sell Samir Nasri this summer because he only had one year left on his deal - and Manchester City TREBLED his wages to £180,000-a-week.

“Our desire is there to convince them to stay," said Wenger. “We tried before and the financial gap on that front has become bigger for us.

"I cannot say that if we go to our maximum wage that we are sure to sign a player.”

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are keen on new Gunners captain Van Persie, while England winger Walcott would have no shortage of takers.

Meanwhile, Wenger is watching 22-year-old Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo.

AND FINALLY

A Brazilian referee has become an internet sensation after he was caught diving during a league game between lower league sides Worker and Mirassol.

Diving referee causes 'riot' during Worker vs Mirassol clash

We all know ‘diving’ has been the bane of referees lives for the past couple of years, so it’s no surprise that one official in Brazil has finally decided to get in on the act.

Taking charge of a Paulistao league match between Worker and Mirassol, the unidentified man in black got embroiled in a heated discussion with an angry Mirassol player after deciding to show the red card to one of his team-mates.

Clearly unimpressed, the Mirassol man aimed a head-but in the official’s direction, and like many a footballer before him, hit the deck like sack of chorizo.

Evident that the ref had got his hands on ‘football’s book of black arts’, the players swarmed round the theatrical official, who eventually needed riot police to keep the angry players at bay.
