Paris St Germain and Inter Milan to offer Tevez an escape route
Paris St Germain and Inter Milan are ready to offer Carlos Tevez an escape route out of Manchester City.
But the Blues will have to slash their £40million summer asking price if they are going to do business for a striker that boss Roberto Mancini has warned will never play for the club again.
Inter will offer £25m for the Argentine when the transfer window opens again in January, but payments will have to be staged. Inter are likely to demand an even bigger discount if Tevez does not see any first team action over the next three months.
Micah Richards, City’s homegrown defender, has told Tevez that he was wrong to go on strike in Munich.
The powerful defender is the first team-mate to publicly criticise Tevez.
Richards said: “Carlos’ reaction in Munich was wrong. It was something he shouldn’t have done.
“There was always going to be a bit of tension because Carlos is a top player and hasn’t been getting in the team. But there was no sign that he was going to do what he did.
“I like Carlos. He’s probably still the best player that I have played with and I’ll always be grateful he came to City and helped us achieve what we did last season.
“He’s been our best player for the last couple of years and won’t be happy the manager has been picking other strikers ahead of him.
“But we are a top team now. We can’t just be about one or two players because if you want to challenge for the big trophies it has t be about the strength of your squad.
“There’s a lesson for us to learn here. If we want to be a top team then as individuals we have to sacrifice ourselves. I went through it myself. I might not be a big name like Carlos Tevez but I am an England international and I thought I should be playing in every game.
“You do get emotional. Your pride does hurt. I found it hard when I wasn’t in the team and at times I did struggle to just keep my head down and say nothing.
“I’ve been rotating with Pablo Zabaleta. At left-back it’s been Kolarov and Clichy. It’s the same with the midfielders and the forwards.
“Aguero and Dzeko have been on fire this season and when Balotelli came on last week against Everton he scored an important goal.
“I thought Carlos was just waiting for his chance to show what he could do.
“You’re never happy if you aren’t playing, but we’ve got a big squad and we’ve all just got to use it.”
Observer writer wants City to show striker the door
Paul Hayward has called on Manchester City to take a financial hit and sack Carlos Tevez.
The chief sports writer of The Observer was speaking on the Sunday Supplement at the end of a week when the sports headlines have been dominated by the actions of the Argentinian striker.
Roberto Mancini accused his forward of refusing to come off the bench during the midweek Champions League game against Bayern Munich and vowed that he would never play for the club again.
Manchester City must now decide whether to pursue a potentially tricky legal process and sack Tevez for misconduct or try to offload him in January for far less than the reported £47million they paid for him two years ago.
And Hayward said the most popular decision within the sport would be if City took a stand and showed him the door straight away.
He said: "It's a £20m question really because City have to decide whether they fudge the issue until January when they can sell him for £20m or just sack him now for gross misconduct.
"A lot of people in the game would like to see Manchester City say: 'To hell with the £20m, we can afford to lose that, Carlos Tevez is fired for gross misconduct.
"He's going to go anyway, so why not take a stand and say: 'We're not putting up with this. Go home. Don't come near the football club again. We're not paying you any more and in January you can leave.'"
Accident
Hayward explained that divisions between the player and the club have been evident for several months, as Tevez made no attempt to hide his desire to leave over the summer.
And he suggested that Tuesday night's flashpoint was a direct result of City's admirable refusal to sell him for less than his market value.
Hayward said: "This is an accident that's been waiting to happen from the moment City took this corporate line over the summer of wanting to recover most of the £47million they'd reportedly paid for Tevez in the first place.
"I respect that, I can see why they didn't want to sell him for £20million to Inter Milan or Real Madrid, but what they did was lumber themselves with a player who just didn't want to be there.
"Mancini, as Paul Scholes pointed out a couple of days ago, has been punishing Tevez, essentially, for wanting to leave in the summer.
"In fairness to Mancini, he bought Sergio Aguero so he'd already replaced Tevez. So what do you do with Tevez? Macnini chose to leave him on the bench to fester.
"Scholes thinks that has got into Tevez's head and that's why he behaved that way in Munich. Nevertheless you can't make allowances for Tevez in that situation."
Ludicrous
In a statement after the match, Tevez argued that the incident was simply a "misunderstanding" between himself and the manager and insisted he was always willing to play for Manchester City.
However, Hayward dismissed those claims as "ludicrous" and argued that the players and his advisors are simply trying to find a way to move on and earn more money.
"Tevez is a machine. He's a PR machine, he's an industry, he's a corporation," he said.
"He moves every two years and is always looking for the better deal, always looking to move on.
"Around him he has a group of advisors and lawyers who are quite willing to bend the truth to get him out of trouble.
"This is what's happening in this situation. The idea that this was a misunderstanding is ludicrous.
"I believe Mancini when he says he went on strike during a game. He refused to go on the pitch."
