There is no reason not to be confident especially with the Villa game showing that the squad are pulling it together. Bob pointed out after the game that the team playing was very similar to the team that came 3rd ( equal 2nd on pts ). So you could look at it as that team as the base of what we have now and the extra players rested as the extra power we have this season.
I'm taking the virtual blanket blackout of press acknowledgement of this fact as a kind of denial that what we have all witnessed is the scary level of the City squad and what that basically means for the season long campaign - that any hoped for weaknesses in depth would eventually show up. What Mancini showed everyone is that he can call on near as dammit two teams, who with marginal differences can play the same way, dictate and control games and be clinically lethal.
Anyone involved in football, if they have a brain that works unlike Hansen, will be looking at City with some desperation, not only for the fact that any City team is going to be seriously difficult to contain, but also if they are looking properly that City still have a lot of room for improvement.
Aguero hasn't had time to gel properly in the team play, Nasri also, Clichy is settling in, Milner finally looks like he has thrown the mental shackles, AJ is getting better, Balo is getting better, Dzeko is too, in fact the last three's team play has improved no end so far this season. The better the team play the better players like Silva and Aguero will be able to show their special abilities.
Milner on this form is going to push Nasri to pull out the stops, which will push Milner in turn.. the beneficiary of that will be Silva who will be in his element playing with others on top of their game and putting the effort in.
We really are in for a treat that tbh even surpasses the good old days of Lee, Summerbee and Bell. And it is still early days.. the squad will not be at its best until after xmas and probs not what it can be till the very end of the season.
On the flip side you could argue that we haven't yet played top top opposition in form in the league.. my own feeling is that until City are really purring we can still be totally confident of standing toe to toe with any and all teams, and at the moment that is all that we need to do.
Some hack has already said that the derby coming up is now more of a test of not getting beat for the rags than it is for City.
Times have changed.
