The former Manchester City star has seen United dominate English football for the past 20 years but, after City’s stunning 6-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday, he feels those days could be numbered.
Summerbee told the Keys and Gray Show: “Their supporters think they have a God given right to win titles and trophies, but we’re coming into an era when it’s going to change.
“The United fans have an opportunity now to sit back and, in the cold light of day, accept they are not the top side any more”Mike Summerbee
“It’s the same as it was in the 60s and 70s when we overtook them and they were nowhere to be seen. The United fans have an opportunity now to sit back and, in the cold light of day, accept they are not the top side any more.
“Everyone’s protecting them this morning saying they should have done this, should have done that, but they were outplayed by a side that’s been like that since the start of the season.”
Summerbee has also heaped praise on Roberto Mancini, and insists his professionalism and man-management will ensure the City bandwagon rolls on towards the ultimate prize.
He added: “I know he’s had the money to do it, but Mancini has bought some fantastic players. He is a very experienced manager and a strong man who, when he makes up his mind, he does it. I can’t believe how professional it is at the training ground.
“And he will continue to approach every game in a professional manner. At the end of the season, when we’ve got the Premier League trophy, that’s when we’ve done well.”
