We are 'CITY' again! Not 'MAN City'

Once upon a time, for us older fans, our beloved club was known as 'CITY', all over the country, not just in the Manchester area. So just as some people writing in complaining about the use of the name 'United' dont understand, forget this Red Devils and Blues/Citizens nonsense, the nicknames are 'CITY' and ''United'. Then over the years, because of our lower and lower profile we became, especially to pundits, commentators and the summarisers we love to hate, 'MAN City'.

We were then 'MAN City' for many, many years, even if the other team on the pitch were a United, an Albion or a Rovers, we were never 'CITY', always 'MAN City'. Exiles like myself could never say we supported 'CITY' because the response would (genuinely) be 'which City?' You always had to say 'Manchester City'.

So has anyone else noticed the change back in the past 2 years? All over TV and radio we are now 'CITY' again or 'El City' in the hispanic world. It's staggering how this change can come about, and brings a tear of nostalgia for the old days.

There are one or two noteable and unenlightened exceptions - Trevor 'MAN City' Francis (who should know better) and Chris Waddle. But I'm sure they will soon go with the flow.

We have our name back. Image

What pisses me off most is commentators and pundits (like Trevor Brooking) that call the scum "Manchester" without the United.

This ^^^ always make my blood boil and leaves me screaming at the radio or TV that there two teams with Manchester in their title although only one actually based in the city!

But getting back to the OP - I can't say I'd noticed the change myself yet but will certainly keep an ear out for it from now on.

Same, especially non-English people not living in the UK do this often, not realising their mistake in that there's two teams in the PL with Manchester in their name, plus a non-league team and the fact that Utd isn't in Manchester to begin with.

I am convinced that they do that as a wind up, I refuse to believe anybody could be so ignorant.

I'm not in the UK and you are completely right, if you say Manchester people think you're talking about the rags, it's annoying I know...

I have heard City referred to in the media as 'Manchester' on several occasions recently, including by people outside the country. i think Lionel Messi was one of them.

Most of the southern pundits go on about some team called Manchunited. I've never heard of em. Dowie does it all the time and so does Venables. Are they referrimg to our quiet neighbours I wonder?

Trevor Francis I can understand because he made his name at Birmingham City.

Most people in Italy for example refer to the rags as "Manchester", I've been trying to explain their mistake for years but most are unwillingly (at best) to acknowledge their mistake

It won't be long before they'll have to acknowledge that we exist and that we're the best.

I've never understood why Manchester has needed abbreviating to "Man". Is it really such a chore to say a three syllable word? People are unbelievably lazy, they will abbreviate anything.

Edit. Ha,I've just remembred the name of this site. No offence meant!

Unfortunately the domain cityfans.net has already been taken so we're stuck with this I'm afraid.

Why is abbreviated such a long word?
