The Reina 'handball'

Just been arguing about this in the pub. If you're 35 yards off your line and the last line of defence, ball-to-hand is no kind of defence.... right? Surely a free kick and a straight red.... right?
If I'm wrong, someone please explain why. This is probably where you come in, B_RF.
Incidentally, they showed a clip of it after the game on sky sports as part of a montage and claimed "loads of talking points after the break." Did they bring it up? No. Nor did they bring it up at half time.

I can't believe they didn't pick up on it in the analysis. Yes it did ricochet on to his arm, but he had his arm spread just in case he didn't block it with his legs. Like you say, being the last line of defence 35 yards out and with your arm outstretched, it's handball IMO.

I can't make my mind up about this. You often see ball to hand's not given due to the close proximity of the player. Then again you often see them given as well.
I'd like to see a replay.

absolutely no way imho. arms by his side and the third ricochet off the ball. he's gone in like a defender, not a keeper.

Good luck with that. It'd been erased from history by half-time.
Whether it's a handball or not, it's definitely a talking point at the very least. The editors at SS should be slapped to death.

first contact is his foot.

How about my point in the OP? Keeper out of his area as last man. If it hits his hand, it's his fault.

This is a prime example of the media bias against City which some people say doesn't exist. It's not that they're deliberately ignoring it happened, it's just that they don't see it as a big thing because we are just City. Imagine the same thing v Utd; 11 players surround the ref, Ferguson running out of his dugout swearing & screaming, bollocking the 4th official.
Because we don't whinge & scream & because we're not Utd or Liverpool it's no big deal. If it had been either team, they would have talked about nothing else at half time & the managers would be going apeshit at full time.
If that 'save' was made in the box people would be saying how well the keeper had done to spread himself & stop the ball. It's a nailed on, 100% red card.

so a keeper who comes out of his area has to chop his arms of to be on the safe side?
nonsense - reina tackles like a defender when he's out of his area. unfortunately.

The 'arms by his side comment means AVS didn't watch it properly & is commenting from 1st memory.
Watch it again, his arm is out to stop the ball if it goes there, which it did. He sacrificed himself for the team but got away with it because the ref was scared to give it.

Had that struck a defender's arm and not been given, I'd have been equally incensed.
That outstretched arm had the same effect as a professional foul as last man. It prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity. Tell me it didn't.

first contact was with his foot - how many times do i have to point that out?
if vinny tackles someone in the box, and the ball bounces off the attacker, and then on to vinny's arm... all in the space of a second - is that a penalty?

Reina was very very lucky. If a defender had done that in the box it should have been a penalty.
Did Atkinson see it and bottle it? We will never know

The arm was out there purely to stop the ball, it's not for balance, it's to stop the ball. It stopped the ball. I don't give a fuck if it hit 6 parts of his body 1st, his arm was out there to stop the ball. It's his fault it hit his arm, not ours. We lost a goalscoring opportunity because his arm was stuck out at right angles to his body & stopped the ball going past him.
If you think Joe Hart would have got away with that you are dreaming.
And yes it is a pen if Vinny does it. If he keeps his arms down it's accidental, if he sticks his arm out sideways he is covering the potential path of the ball deliberately.

i really can't believe this - reina is clearly playing the ball with his FOOT!!! he's not "making himself big"!!!
where should he have put his arms whilst challenging WITH HIS FOOT!!!!!
