From the MEN....

Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher is to take "an extended break from football" owing to a chronic inflammatory bowel condition, his club today announced.

Didn't Michael Johnson have a chronic inflammatory bowel condition? (?Crohns disease...)

Thats exactly my thoughts on it. Very very strange. I think there is more to this and so do the rags in my office. They are really thin on the ground in CM.....

If it is Crohn's Disease, it would be very difficult for him to maintain a diet that would allow him to achieve peak fitness. He would be able to get healthy and maintain a normal life, but I can't see him playing regularly for a top team unless the illness is something less severe.

I hope he follows doctors advice and lives a long healthy life.

Sounds a lot like Crohns disease or something similar. Not nice at all. Footballing rivalries aside I wish him good health and a speedy recovery.

That was my theory on it, which seemed to have been picked up off here, and spread round as fact in other places. I was actually PM'd about it by two or three people, at least one of whom I assumed to be a journalist, judging from his post count and type of post.

No wonder he weighs 8 stone. Seems like an utter cunt who would be stood on the street corners up in Scotland with a gang of mates if it wasn't for football.

Using the rest of his dole money to buy a can of iron Bru and a battered mars bar!

After that programme that was on telly a few months back could this be a cover up for a cocaine ban?

I do love all the 'Sounds like' and 'That was my theory' posts, I'll make sure if I'm ill get it on here first thing for a proper diagnosis ;-)

Just goes to show that these things can happen to anyone and as I actually like him as a player I'm more than happy to say I hope it's not as bad as it sounds and that he gets himself on the mend soon.

It's Ulcerative Colitis (UC), related to and can be just as bad as Crohn's Disease. I've got a mild case of it but with plenty of pills I cope with it and never take time off work - problem is you never get rid of it, just goes into remission. More serious cases means getting your whole colon removed. The likes of Steve Redgrave and JFK have/had it. Cain from Emmerdale has it and there are many more. Once under control you can get your strength back no problem but the real issue is diet and the types of drugs he will have to take. Steroids majorly help recovery but that's not going to pass water with the Premiership drug squad.

He may play for that bunch of twonks but wouldn't anyone to get UC.

UC came close to nearly killing me, I habe no colon now, hope he copes better than me and returns to the game
