Referees are to be ordered to punish all two-footed challenges with red cards in a hardline move to clear up confusion over dangerous tackles.
An imminent instruction from referees’ chief Mike Riley will apply whether or not there is contact or injury to an opponent — and even if the ball is won first.
Referees are understood to be aware from recent get-togethers that a firm line is being taken and Riley is in the process of providing further clarification on how the existing law is to be applied.

It means the recent controversial dismissal of Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany against Manchester United is to become a standard sanction for the type of challenge that has the potential to harm a rival player.
The move is a clear attempt to draw a line under an issue that has led to cries of inconsistency.
Three days after Kompany saw red for what was widely seen as a clean, ball-winning tackle on Nani at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool’s Glen Johnson escaped any punishment for what looked a cruder lunge on City’s Joleon Lescott.
The lack of even a yellow card infuriated City manager Roberto Mancini, who was so incensed he waved an imaginary card in the direction of the referee, Lee Mason.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has called for referees to show consistency, saying: ‘These inconsistencies are confusing to everyone. Referees have to be given direction about what are the laws of the game and what should be permitted in terms of tackles.
‘Mike Riley has to be given the rope to say this is not allowed, two-footed tackles are not acceptable, whether you take the ball or not.’
Now Riley is set to do just that by telling referees they must send off players guilty of two-footed challenges for the ball if an opponent is in the immediate vicinity.
It is a judgment call that could be regarded as equally controversial. But it is aimed at letting all players — and referees — know where they stand.

It follows that referee Chris Foy, widely criticised at the Etihad earlier this month, was deemed to be right to send off Kompany in the FA Cup third-round clash while Mason was wrong not to dismiss Johnson in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg.
FIFA laws themselves are open to interpretation. ‘Using excessive force’, a sending-off offence under Law 12, applies in cases where the player has ‘far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent’.
Referees are advised that if both feet are off the ground players have no control over their actions.

heard this on 5 live this morning its bollocks cos what the get out clause is what is deemed to be two footed, for example kompanys was 1 footed imo, so they still have an oppurtunity to say the ref interpreted that as a 1 footed challenge, which you have pointed out is just as dangerous. so if the trial by media continues scholes will be a 1 footed and say richards will have been 2. the rules have been in place since football began. they just need to stick by them. i can remember before yellow and red card bollox when a player was sent off it was usually very serious foul play and you thought sent off must have been fighting on pitch or summat. it was unusual now its for
nothing at all 2 yellows 2 nothing incidents.

Did the git say anything about considering such factors as 'Age' , speed of the player ?

I mean how can that slow , old ginger haired retiree from United get away with kicking a player in the stomach ?

Perhaps it's because his legs are shot, he's out of touch, slow and not match fit ?

Going in two-footed might be punished for a while, but then things will get lax over a period of time and we'll end up being back where we are now. It's a repeating cycle which ends up being nothing more than a fad and a knee jerk reaction.

Very true. These fads are just a way to make excuses for referees and their abysmal inability to translate the laws of the game onto the pitch. What we need are sensible, accountable referees, and we can leave it up to the two captains on any given day whether they want to shake hands with the opposition or not. Players like Vincent Kompany wouldn't be getting sent off if referees didn't do one thing in one match, then did the opposite in the next (or even five minutes later in the same game).

Agree with you Ted, however, I'm happy with the clarification, even if it's the wrong one. The rule is now clarified and therefore I expect anyone doing it to be sent off. If the ref somehow misses it, I expect the FA to subsequently charge the player. Everyone now knows where they stand, including the City players.

Let's see how long we go before a clear red card challenge isn't carded or picked up by the FA afterwards. I'll go for sometime tomorrow when Scholes/Gerrard/Shrek/Johnson/Wellbeck/Wio dive in on some dirty foreigner.

Refs will still use their discretion...dependant on how discreetly the envelope was passed.

I apologise, I was wrong. It was actually Maxi that went in two footed, the ref up his hand in his pocket, then noticed he was about to be subbed so let it go. He was replaced by Kuyt who blot the winner. If it wasn't against the rags, it'd be ridiculous.
