Should The PreMatch Handshake Continue?

With what we have seen recently, and the Bridge/Terry incident a couple of years ago, is it time to get rid of this pointless exercise?

It is supposed to be a display of respect and sportsmanship, do these things still exist between players of rival clubs? If so, do they really need to shake hands to prove it?

The Terry/Bridge incident was one that i understood. Almost every one of us would had done the same, after what JT did. But looking at what happend yesterday, that was completly over the top. I somehow understood Suarez for not wanting him to shake Evra's hand, but i do not understand why Evra reacted like that and then Wio, the player that needs to be in every conflict it seems, did what he did.

I wouldn't shake hands with someone who I cannot stand, so I can understand what Suarez did no matter what anyone says.

But to answer the question..................................NO it should not continue.

Kind of beside the point of the thread, but I don't get this - it's fine for the Suarez to be racist and then not to shake Evra's hand, but Evra's in the wrong for reacting? Agree re Wio, though.

Kenny said to Suarez to do what he wants (or this is what Sky are reporting) so he decided not to shake his hand. He didn't look at Evra, he just ...skipped a hand. Imagine if JT would had react the same way, at Bridge.

And no, i don't think this handshake moment must go on, but it's interesting that we seen these moments only at top players, leaders, megastars who we see in every tv show, but not from players that work their ass off every week.

Regardless of the these events I still don't see any reason for shaking hands at the start of a game, it's seems to be all part of the show for TV yet the TV jumps to the adverts when they do it.

We've probably all played football at whatever level and never felt the need to shake hands at the start. For me, I'd chat to opposition players, especially those that I knew, but at the start of the game it was the time when I wanted to focus, psych myself up if you may. At that point they were the enemy in my mind and rather than shake hands I wanted to kill them, metaphorically speaking.

Just bin it. Let them shake hands in the tunnel if they want prior to bursting out onto the pitch. Even the pedestrian walk-out pisses me off.

Yes it should continue in my opinion. It clearly marks out the men from the boys.

Even our own Wayne should have been man enough to rise above it for 2 seconds. He had his shirt on, he was working. It takes a big pair of bollocks to do it though.

What Suarez did yesterday was pathetic and goes A LONG WAY to his ban being justified. It takes a bigger man than him, and a bigger man than Wio to stay above it.

Always thought it was a waste of time . Why shake hands before a match?, does any other sport do it? No problem after when it should be done

Never should have had it in the first place apart from maybe at finals or internationals, It's a typical phoney Sepp Blatter piece of bullshit.

That doesn't excuse Suarez btw, racist cunt.

I feel the same way about it as I do about the silly american cunts and their "compulsory tipping".

Its a fucking gesture and when its volunteered, its a nice moment.

Correct. Have you noticed how Sky exploit these things. Usually they are always on a break for the handshake, or at least at a distance, yet yesterday they had a camera on the spot to ensure they got the money shot, as if pre-planned. It was obvious the ref had sorted this out prior yet it still happened; a slap in the face for Dowd. Then, at half-time, Shreeves pops up as the on-the-spot man telling us there has been some major trouble in the tunnel and changing rooms, further fanning the fire. But the piece de resistance was the after-match interviews with the managers. Shreeves managed to forget anything about the game and asked only about the actions of certain players to further their agenda.

This isn't about football anymore and where Taggart says that Saurez could have caused a riot, he was wrong, it is his comments and Sky's management of the game that can cause the riot and further hatred and animosity between the 2 teams down the line.

I think the hand shaking is not necessary and is actually hypocritical. You smile at someone and say good luck ,fair game ! And 10 minutes later he's gone over the top knowingly and taken you out at the knee !

In my veterans team we had this discussion and all found it a sham, some teams and players still come to kick us off the park and we are almost oaps fgs !

I also think Evra held back yesterday too. I think if the hand had been offered Suarez would have shook it even though he never made eye contact with Evra.

For me, we can dispense with this charade.

Footballers are, on the whole, overpaid, classless, wankers so making them pretend to be gentlemen before a game is a bit hypocritical.

Oy ! Are you calling me and my footie mates, near oap's that we are classless? Outside mate, outside ! ; :-)

Our captain, i'll have you know, is a respected doctor and psychologist. His half time talks are legendary and usually go for the full hour, which we get at a discount ! Also he gives a rebate because we have our own massage table which doubles as a couch, during his 'Half time' consultations.

Never mind City coming on late for the start of the second half, our opposition fall asleep waiting for his talks to end. A cunning tactic, cos whilst they sleep, we can wrack up a few goals.

For me we should just get rid of it it's pointless, these clubs play each other week in week out so i don't see the need for it. I think we should still keep it for international games though.

Completely off topic but the reason that Americans are so obsessed with tipping is that they (service industry as far as I understand it) get taxed on their earnings plus 15%, presuming that they will get that amount of tips off everyone. If they don't get the tips they still pay tax! So don't blame the poor waitresses, it's the system that's to blame.

Quite a good discussion but swore at my screen at some of Keegan's blatant Sky party line of not acknowledging City as top 4 grrrrr what was he thinking????
