The worst performanc you have ever seen from a City player?

Postby Grob » Mon Feb 20, 2012 8:43 pm

Following on from Niall's thread on all-time disliking 11, I couldn’t get the single worst performance I've ever seen from a City player out of my head which was Ray Kelly's hour upfront when we played Huddersfield at home in the good old days of the 97/98 season and lost 1-0. Im sure it was on a Friday night.

It was just the worst performance I've ever seen. He was so far out of his depth it was almost funny. His touch started off bad and got worse. He could barely kick the ball further than 5 yards, and was muscled off the ball everytime it came near him. Im sure he was subbed just before the hour and replaced by Chris Greenacre or someone. It was just unreal to watch. We were shit in those days and the likes of Jason Van Blerk and Ged Brannen used to put in some seriously woeful displays on a weekly basis, but nothing ever sank to the depths of Ray Kelly.

Richard Edghill at home to Coventry sticks out in my mind as a close second, he misplaced so many passes in his own half then scored a looping header of an own goal, was viciously booed, trudged off the pitch at HT and wasn’t seen again for months. I was contemplating running onto the pitch and assaulting him he was that bad.

Anymore out there I've missed?!?!

Was that when they stuffed us about 5-0 at home? Henry scored about 4 of them?

Gerry Taggart at right-back against Blackburn, April 15 1989 - day of Hillsborough. A brain fart by Mel Machin, he got dry bummed all day by Scott Sellars and we lost 4-0.

Ray Kelly's is a good one too, as made two appearances that night - his first and thankfully his last.

Honourable mention to David White's England Cap against Spain when he missed a sitter in the first minute and played bloody awful.

David Brightwell at left back against the Rags when he was "marking" Kanchelskis. He was annihilated and the mismatch was largely responsible for our 5-0 hammering.

Kinky away at Port Vale....obviously had loads of shitter players but he really couldnt care less that day.
Also, Robinho away at Everton springs to mind.....
think it is worse when expect good performance and get cant be arsed approach.....some of our crap players over the years never expected much so wasnt as disappointed....
although, did despair at pretty much every performance by Bob Taylor

Will we ever give Richard Edgehill a break. The og was a result of Danny Tiatto bombing upfield, and when the inevitable counter attack came he was trying to cover left as well as right.

I prefer the memory of his pen against Gillingham at Wembley.

All of the above apart from, I can't remember Ray Kelly at all. It's on the tip of my brain, but I really have managed to expunge it from memory, along with quite a few other games from those days. Result.

I recon Savic's 1st half v Liverpool was up there with some of the crappiest defending I've ever seen.

This is an easy one for me.

Javier Garrido at Stamford bridge when we got tonked 6-0. I'm sure about 4 of them goals went through his legs on the way in. Nice lad but he had a mare that day.

I agree. I want to remember that penalty plus his debut at Wimbledon when he was immense.

Gerry Taggart at Blackburn jumps straight to the forefront of my mind. Not only did he get arse raped in a right tonking, but for extra shite factor he was completely one footed and was trying to bend long balls down the line with the outside of his left foot. I don't think he managed to find the pitch let alone one of his own players. Not really his fault but abject nevertheless.

Last game of 93 season, Margetson in goal - the worst performance of a City keeper ever - 3-1 down to everton at half time I've never heard a crowd singularly blame one player for a score line (Margetson had made a complete hash of two of the goals if memory serves me right) Dibble came on as second half sub & Im not sure we saw Margetson in a city line up again ? Game finished 5-2

David Brightwell at left back home to Leicester. 0-1 (Mark Robins). Weds evening pissing down all day and night.

Ah, Margetson, that reminds me of Wolves away when we got relegated to Division 2, same season as the previously mentioned Ray Kelly affair and Kinky's stroll around Vale Park. We drew 2 each and the 2 wolves goals were Margetson dropping a corner into his own net and then diving over a 30 yard free kick from Paul Simspon which pretty much went into the middle of the goal.

The worst keeper Ive ever seen play for City
