Third In The League, Just Won A Local Derby - You're Sacked!

What a way to treat a promising young British manager!

Sheffield Wednesday have sacked manager Gary Megson, despite the Owls winning Sunday's Steel City derby.
The 1-0 win over Sheffield United moved them up to third in League One.
Chairman Milan Mandaric said he took the decision to give the club the best "chance of achieving our key aim of promotion".
"This was a very difficult decision but one that has been taken with the best interests of Sheffield Wednesday at heart," he added.
Megson's position at Hillsborough has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks.

Regardless of the decision, the timing is bizarre. If I was an L1 manager I'd be aiming to finish 7th. All those in charge of the promotion contenders are getting binned.

What has to be said is that they are 5 points off automatic promotion (1game played more) and 11 points clear of the nearest promotion chasers. This is a non-gamble and more of an individual choice by the chairman. Still, a bit shitty all the same and why some managers deserve a pay-off.

I've tried hard to expunge all mental records of Gary Megson in a blue shirt, but without success. Much like his efforts in our midfield. Don't like the guy, he always looked over forty when he played for us. Milan Darichman is a top nob also, but seeing 'Meggo' get let go, is quite amusing I reckon.

lee clark or mick mccarthy lined up?

i'd like to see wednesday back in the top flight. got to be better having them there than wigan/bolton/qpr/blackburn. even after a decade out of the big time they still manage to get c.20,000 in week in week out.

'Steel City derby', as they call it, had a crowd of 36,000 odd at the weekend. Fair play to em. Always kinda liked Wednesday; never met a Wednesday fan I didn't like and used to like watching Waddle, and Hirst. And Carlton Palmer, obviously.

I'd say I'd prefer them in the Prem to Wigan, but at least Wigan are on the right side of the Pennines.

Megson is upper Championship to lower Premierleague quality manager. They were lucky to have him. But Mandaric has always been a sneaky clown. I bet Megson found out about some wrongdoings by Mandaric.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Wednesday are my second club, I spose, and I always try to catch their games on the rarity that they're televised. Ridiculous decision all round, the crowd on Owlstalk are fuming.

The wind up orders 18 months ago looked near terminal, so the inevitable Mandaric out chants will be a bit much. Still, under Laws and Irvine, the club was in free fall. Megson's done a fantastic job at arresting the slump (relegated in '10, 15th in League One last season) and, as above, is/was a better manager than a third tier club could expect to have, let alone one with only money for loans.

Steel City derby had the 5th highest attendance anywhere in England last week. Very harsh on Megson because he's a boyhood Owls fan, too.

If my memory isn't playing tricks didn't Megson used to throw up at half time he got so nervous?

Megson is a truly dreadful manager, who was too dull even for Bolton. Their fans hated him with a passion because he couldn't give them the football Fat Sam "entertained" them with. No club could ever be considered "lucky" to have him!

Big club in 1st division. People shouldn't be even considering shit like quality football. Royle wasn't much better either but I'm sure as hell happy he got us back to top flight.

I hope so too.

"Norwich City, Blackpool, Stockport County, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday."

Managing since 1995 - only 17 years man. He wont be experienced until he's done 40 years!

What seems to be a factor in all Megson's managerial appointments is an uncompromising miserable attitude, which eventually spreads to the players. Maybe Mandaric just wanted him to smile more?

Dave Jones appointed. Hopefully he can do what Pardew's done after Hughton. I doubt it though.

And for SWFC, Megson's style of direct football works/worked. Like Hughes, he's never had a plan B, but at least he's played to the strengths of players at the club. Beyond strength/fitness/height, they don't have much else.

Not a high level Premiership manager, but too good for League One and wrongly sacked, imo.
