I had to wear one (Balck and Blue Split) for football and rugby as my dentist told me I wasn't covered after having my front teeth (3 of em) knocked out. I used to pick and choose between games depending on who I was up against but more times than not, I'd have it in.

Starngely, when I wore it, people wnated to knock my head off. There was many a time someone tried to give me a right hook. Losers!

If its not medical its probably that the footballer has had his teeth done like Simon Cowell and needs to protect his "investment"

I think 'medical' and 'protecting your teeth' are the same thing, pal.

One thing is still the other. You protect your teeth for medical reasons; for medical reasons you protect your teeth. Comprende?

What if people do it for vanity's sake? Is that a medical condition? Bloody internets and their semantic vagaries.

I got a front tooth kicked out by a City fan telling a rather animated story, and had it crown and posted, before then having it deliberately elbowed out by some pathetic cowardly scumbag during a football match. Ended up getting an implant, and was told to wear a gumshield. I still have it, but don't really wear it anymore.

You can't help but sound like Rocky after 12 rounds wearing a gumshield. It tends to slip, especially when you're shouting some important, rousing comment to your team-mates, so anything you say loses gravitas, and leads to mockery and pisstaking. And that's just from my own team. Bastards.

I got an upper row front tooth loosened years ago by a woman whose sudden convulsions brought the bone in her groin sharply up into my jaw.

the pro's make more than enough money to have their teeth fixed if there is an issue ... maybe it's not so much of an issue with national healthcare as well, but in the US, I wouldn't find it weird to see someone wearing a mouth guard. Hardly anyone gives dental coverage and there are some dirty fuckers playing in the lower levels in america. If you get your teeth fucked up and need work done, you are out of pocket quite a bit of money in our fucked up system.

Personally, I don't wear a mouth guard, but then again my company gives me a nice dental plan! I do for sure when I play rugby, and if I had to, i don't think i would mind it in soccer either. I don't think it's vanity to not want your teeth knocked out or to walk around looking like a meth head with missing teeth.

As most of the bangs in the face received by footballers are imaginary, why not wear imaginary gumshields ? They could feign it falling out due to the impact of the imaginary blow & hold it up to the ref to prove how severe the non contact actually would have been if it had actually happened. Drogba could keep shouting to the bench for a new one as each falls out under the sheer non impact of the defender not going near him.

Did you see when someone in the crowd at the bridge shoot drogba in the Napoli match last night? Oh wait it was not an actual gunshot but a players elbow. Oh wait not the players actual elbow but it was a response to a players elbow coming too near his face without actually making contact. my bad.

After drogs rolled around the replay showed him slow mo open his eyes to see if his act was being bought. And it was.

Fucking pathetic.
