There's a difference between being a fascist and a racist.

Mussolini was a futurist before he was a fascist. Maybe di Canio is just a discriminating artiste who prefers the violence, motion and fin de siècle wannabes that were the futurists? Marinetti is fantastic.

I can't abide the fascism but thought I'd offer some historical context.

And to BiBs point I don't think Italian fascism in spirit included racist when compared to their axis powers partners Nazi story unfolded, did it? Some Italian poster can weigh in here please.

Although, my neapolitan grandfather referred to his marriage to a Sicilian girl as "interracial" by italian standards, so maybe I'm just being myopic.

Tattooing a symbol of a long-dead fascist dictator on your arm doesn't seem a great way of celebrating a forward thinking art movement like the futurism, wouldn't you say? My favourite futurist is probably Elmer Diktonius - one of Finland's finest. Splendid imagery, no to mention how he captures the rhythm of the factory floor in his verse.

He's a big train spotter and was therefore very pleased with Mussolini getting them to run on time.

Whilst trying to avoid politics, not sure Mussolini was racist as such. Think he had a Jewish girlfriend/mistress etc. He was just a bit right wing and didn't like people who disagreed with him, say a bit like Tony Blair. I suspect if he was running for president of the old US of A at the moment, he'd be accused of being a commie for being too left wing on most things.

Through biological racism was less prominent in Fascism than National Socialism, right from the start there was a strong racist undercurrent to the spazio vitale concept, in which Mussolini asserted there was a “natural law” for stronger peoples to subject and dominate “inferior” peoples such as the “barbaric” Slavic peoples of Yugoslavia as Mussolini claimed in a September 1920 speech.[58] In the same way, Mussolini argued that Italy was right to follow an imperalist policy in Africa because all black people were "inferior" to whites.

That's Imperialism, not Racism. It's kinda like saying that British expansion in the world was fuelled by racist sentiments, whilst ignoring the whole economical and nationalistic aspects.

Also, just because you admire someone doesn't mean you automatically believe in their policies/ideals. I can imagine that in Italy, like other Mediterranean countries, views on race and politics are quite often entirely separate.

While on a boating trip on August 4, 1938, Mussolini talked about the German dictator's new anti-Semitic laws with his mistress, saying "I've been racist since 1921," according to AFP.

"I don't know how they can think that I'm imitating Hitler, he wasn't born yet..." he was quoted as saying. "We must give Italians a feeling of race so that they don't create half-castes, so that they don't spoil what is beautiful about us."

Two months later, on October 11, Mussolini is again at sea with Petacci, when he was quoted as saying: "Those bloody Jews, they should be destroyed ... I'll build an island and put them all there..."
