Probably a combination of being asked to play at full-back and being pretty shit at full-back.

Looked like an arrogant prick and played like a complete shithouse. Considering his size, the number of tackles he completely bottled was unreal, was glad to see the back of him.
He just feigned injury in the 120th minute to try and get subbed and get out of taking a penalty the fucking coward. Fortunately the ref blew for full time before they could make a sub. Hope he misses.

I still remember him pulling out of a tackle with a full back whilst playing centre half for us. Complete shithouse of a footballer. Would make Savic look composed if he'd played there every week.

Spent most of the time with a mysterious injury he picked up when crippled by a hostesses trolley on a flight over & then whinged he wasn't being played enough! Never seemed to like it here & was desperate to get back to Germany the moment he hobbled off the plane

The trolley was a better stopper.

Came across as a bit of a pain in the tits, played like a complete pratt then went gobbing off like a tit to the press. Fuckwit. I dont think he was suited to this club, glad to see the back of.

My one great memory of him is from pre-season (against Valencia maybe?), he strode up the pitch from the right back position knocked the ball one side and ran past the defender on the other side then played a perfect cross onto the foot of barry who stuck it into the back of the net.
It was all down hill after that

some players aren't mentally tough enough to play in a foreign league/foreign country. It happens to people who aren't in such high pressure environments/jobs as well. Some people just aren't very adaptable ... I think boateng fits into this category.
He never really got comfortable in his new surroundings, he didn't hit the ground running and he had injury problems which probably stopped him from ever playing at 100%. Add to that the stress of expectation and living in a new place and he just fell apart. I think it's as simple as that.
He handled it like a bitch, but i've seen people I know very well fall apart in much simpler/friendlier/easier circumstances, so I can't say I blame him personally. He didn't need to speak out against the club so much, but some people aren't very professional either. That's just life. Might also have something to do with the whole Germany/England dynamic as well.
You don't see many English players going to play abroad either. It does take a certain mental toughness which not everyone has, which is not a slight on anyone, just my opinion.

If Boateng had to face the same teams & tactics in Germany which he faced in England, he wouldn't be playing for Bayern. The Premier League is much tougher. You can see the difference in Dzeko & how he suffers from the exact same problem at the other end of the pitch & you could imagine how nice & comfortable both would be playing against each other; both doing their little party pieces with oohs & ahhs from the crowd, people sticking Dzeko's lovely touches & Boatengs perfectly timed interceptions on Youtube. They could both shake hands afterwards & talk to the press about how good their opponent was & what a great contest it had been.
Gomez on the other hand would trip over his own feet, barge Boateng off the pitch & miss the target , do it again, do it agian, then finally do it again & score, whilst Boateng sat on the grass holding his ankle.

Like kinkylola said, some people just do not adapt well to life away from home. Fair enough. He could perhaps have been a bit more dignified about it but from a City perspective we haven't really suffered for losing him. Onward and upward.
