A Manchester United supporting businessman who was blocking City’s plans for a £100m training complex has struck a last-minute deal with the Blues.

Shaun O’Brien had refused to sell the site of his vehicle-recovery firm on land opposite the Etihad Stadium earmarked for the huge development.

A public inquiry was due to decide whether the Reds fan should be forced to sell-up.

Beswick-born Mr O’Brien is understood to have previously rejected a £1m offer from the Blues.

He set up a website – called Unite Against City – offering square-foot blocks of the site at £250 each in an attempt to tie up the land in red tape.

But it is believed that Mr O’Brien returned to the negotiating table after his offer failed to attract buyers. The website has now been taken down.

sorry if posted elsewhere

Now the M.E.N. can reveal Mr O’Brien – who owns OB Truck Services in Openshaw West – has reached a settlement with the Blues just days before the public inquiry starts. City and council officials confirmed a settlement had been reached. Both Mr O’Brien and City have agreed not to reveal its value.

Manchester council, which is working with City to develop their plans for the ground, was seeking a compulsory purchase order to acquire the land at market value.

Next week’s hearing will be held by a government planning inspector and is scheduled to run for four days at the Friends Meeting House in Manchester.

The club wants to transform the run-down 80-acre plot in the shadow of the Etihad Stadium.

As well as a new training complex there would be a 7,000-capacity arena, community facilities and a new sixth-form college.

Backers say it would create 250 jobs and kick-start development in one of Britain’s poorest neighbourhoods.

Mr O’Brien was not available for comment.

put right for you, anyway you can fly from donny now

Backers say it would create 250 jobs and kick-start development in one of Britain’s poorest neighbourhoods. however Mr O’Brien was not available for comment because he realised he would be stopping jobs being created and did not want to look a bigger wanker than he already is.

Edited correctly.

Revealed: Manchester City plans to create home-grown stars as part of £170m Football Academy plan

Manchester City's mega-rich Sheikh wants to create a world-beating team of home-grown stars, according to files revealed today by the M.E.N.

The papers, prepared by the club ahead of a public inquiry into its plans for a new top-flight academy and training ground, show that:

City’s owners have set aside more than £170m for the project opposite the Etihad Stadium;
Bosses have pledged a permanent home-grown presence in the first-team squad from 2027;
Council chiefs believe east Manchester’s regeneration hopes rest on the club and there is no hope of transforming the area without it.
Senior City figures were forced to set out the case for their ambitious academy plans after the council asked the government to approve a compulsory purchase order that would force businesses in the area to sell up to make way for the scheme, which features a 7,000-capacity arena, sixth form college, sports science institute and community sports facilities.

Only two firms were blocking the project, which promises to create 250 jobs, but both struck 11th-hour deals with City.

CPO papers show how the club began work on the Manchester City Football Academy – known internally as The World Class Project – within months of the 2008 takeover by Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group.

Evidence prepared by MCFC board member Martin Edelman explains: "Delivery of the MCFA health and education facilities is driven by a heartfelt commitment by the club to become a world class football club, to nurture football and other talent in the community from which the club originally evolved and to contribute to the regeneration of east Manchester."

It continues: "The owner’s ambition to develop a successful and sustainable club requires the prioritisation of youth development to ensure the club can attract and retain talented young players thereby increasing the squad’s proportion of ‘home grown’ talent."

Documents assembled by Jon Stemp, the Blues’ chief infrastructure officer, reveal closer working with partner clubs in local, national and international ‘talent hot spots’ and set out a ‘measurable commitment to maintaining a percentage of the first team squad as home grown from 2027’.

The CPO papers show how the club has been acquiring the land for the complex, in Openshaw West, since 2009. They have relocated three businesses and in one case, FW Singleton scrap metal dealers, constructed a new facility for the company.

The final two firms to settle, OB Truck Services and New Life Windows, had formally objected on a number of grounds, including that the development did not fit in with the area.

A letter from the club’s Abu Dhabi owners to town hall chiefs on March 14 confirmed the full £170m funding was in place to deliver the scheme. Eddie Smith, chief executive of regeneration company New East Manchester, says in his evidence: "Without the MCFC scheme, there is no foreseeable prospect of development on the Order Lands.

I guess if Soriano is coming... anything is possible re. the subject above.

So they are going to start a quota system for homegrown players in the team FROM 2027.

Haha, so much for all the rag mafia who thought they'd be off after a few years.

The noisy neighbours are buying up the street & moving the rest of their family in.

Thats the dream! 11 Mancunians dying for the shirt, growing up, developing within sight of the ground! and all the media do is run it down. peasants!

On another note i'd think it would be really cool if they could do some tie in with the 6th form college and help develop athletes in other sports!

Don't necessarily think "home grown" will mean Mancunians (or even British) players but I'm sure it will include some
