A bit more indeed than simply putting themselves in pole position for the title. What they appeared to be marking was something more substantial: the beginning of a new era. Not to mention the end of an old one.

Even if City slip up at the last to hand the honours to their now slightly less voluble neighbours, the trajectories for the immediate future appear to be set in place. City, with the deepest pockets in the game, will only grow stronger after this. While United face major reconstruction work.

Of course, the baton has changed hands in the race for Mancunian football supremacy before.

Before the First World War, United’s management cynically exploited City's punishment for financial irregularity to snap up their best players, who subsequently won the reds the title for the first time.

It was at another derby in 1974 that City helped to dispatch United into their only post-war spell out of the top division. In 1999, as City lifted themselves out of the gloom of third tier football, United were romping to the treble.

But the imminent exchange of dominance feels different not just because it is the first time many of those dancing in delirium in the Etihad stands will have seen City in the ascendant. Nor is it simply because it promises to be more substantial. It seems new because of the motivations of those steering the light blue cause.

For many City fans, a first league championship in 44 years will taste all the sweeter if they could pip United to it. That’s what really matters to them, beating United.

I was brought up steeped in the rivalry between the two clubs, and from the moment United stole City’s thunder by winning the European Cup the week after City had won the league in 1968, my blue friends convinced themselves they were yoked to a vast conspiracy emanating from Old Trafford designed to do their club down.

For many of my mates, United have played a disproportionate part in their thoughts. It became a mark of identity, how down-trodden they were by the hateful Salford supremacists. Even the best-selling memoir of a City fan, written with characteristic gallows humour by Colin Shindler, had the other lot’s name in its title: Manchester United Ruined My Life.

In that, City’s more masochistic fans are no different from the followers of many a club. The problem was, however, that too often in the past such thinking infiltrated and infected the boardroom. For owners like Peter Swales and Francis Lee, getting one over on United was the sum of their ambition.

There were many in the club who deemed a season like 2008 a successful one entirely because they did the double over United. Never mind that United themselves were European champions.

But now, it is different. The new owners do not share any such sense of inferiority. They have no history of coming second best. They were not brought up on Stuart Hall chortling about the Theatre of Base Comedy.

They were not there when Alan Ball instructed his players to waste time playing for a draw, comically unaware his team needed to win to avoid relegation. They feel no need to laugh at their new property.

And for the members of the Abu Dhabi royal family beating United is not the summit of their purpose. Watching the pitchside hoardings spin through their repertoire on Monday you got an idea of where their motivation lies.

There were adverts for the Abu Dhabi grand prix, for holidays in the gulf, for the many destinations of Etihad, the family airline.

What Sheik Mansour and his relatives want is for their football club to spread the word about their homeland, to put it on the map. And to do that, it will need to win a lot more than the odd local derby. The owners need it to rule the footballing world.

For them, beating United is fine in that it brought them three points closer to the championship, the first staging post on their journey to footballing domination. But they have no personal score to settle.

Likewise their manager Roberto Mancini, however nattily he sports that sky blue scarf, would have been as happy were it Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool who were vanquished. Sure, by out-smarting Alex Ferguson he has nicely buffed up his self-esteem, but he has no personal animus against the colour red driving him on.

The new owners even removed the long-held ban on tomato ketchup in the refreshment concessions. No need for that when your eyes are on bigger prizes.

And in a sense that makes the way ahead much clearer. For the fans, six points and nirvana awaits. For the hierarchy, however, even a slip-up at this stage will not alter the plan. Losing out at the last to United — however unlikely - will be no cause of trauma.

Quality reinforcements will be bought in whatever the outcome of the title race.

Their intent is clear: it is to become the best. If in pursuit of that they leave United behind then so be it. Not because they are United, but because what these City owners want is to leave everyone behind.

Finally a journo has stood back and thought about the bigger picture.

It was outlined from the start that the oil in Abu Dhabi would eventually run dry, not for a while yet, and when it does they will need another source of income and we are it. The plan to make Manchester City the best and most successful club in the world is well under way.

On the back of that success will be global branding on a huge scale such things as perhaps clothing, food outlets, cars , airlines all manner of things and all the time there will be the association with Abu Dhabi, so we will, in effect, become a huge advertising banner for our owners. This will dispel any fears that we are a 5 year plaything for our owners as if proof were needed after the proposed huge investment in the Academy complex..

We are in safe hands people..

Beautiful stuff. I really am proud to be a supporter of such a wonderful club. Still can't believe they banned ketchup though!

Absolutely agree! All they had to do was paint black stripes on the bottle.

I kind of got it from the get go but lot of journos and even some supporters didn't quite get why they were spending such vast amounts of money. They were never interested trivialities like winning individual games no matter who it was against. They essentially bought us as one giant marketing tool. People think that we are spending massive amounts of money, and in football sense we are, but when you hink that want maximum marketing exposure possible I don't think there are many things better than "best football team in the world". Spending hundreds of millions when you reach billions (and I'm not exaggarating here) isn't really that big of a deal.

Most important thing for them is that the Club is seen in positive light. Win, lose or draw. They want to keep strong ties to community and fans but that is because we have positive image of being supporter friendly club with strong roots. And don't get me wrong, I'm not giving them shit here, quite the contrary, it all serves purposes of us as supporters and them as owners. There is no downside for anyone. Same as why they are making us succesfull. We need to be biggest in the world to get full marketing exposure yet we also get to enjoy the success as fans.

When you think that according to some statistics there were over 800 million people watching the Derby live throughout the world, you kind of start to understand why they are doing it. How else can you reach 800 million people at a time in this world?

I think they have been gobsmacked at how good an aquisition City has turned out to be.

For all this professional, promotional attitude though, the inevitable has happened; they have caught the bug.

Turn your minds back to Khaldoon & Sheikh Mansour at the Liverpool game & the brief moment where the Sheikh gave in to his emotions with a sharp intake of breath as City almost scored, then the composed, polite applause when they did.

Contrast that to Khaldoon's snarl of emotion & Uwe stlyle fist pumping uppercut salute as the goal went in v the rags. Fantastic. Or fan-tastic, as that's what he has become. I bet he finds himself talking economics with Obama & his mind briefly drifting to whether we need better backup for Gael Clichy.

Great post!
it sums it up pretty smartly. I'd further stress that the so called and abused "spending spree" has been due to the need to take over Platini & Big 14's FFP plan, set up in the desperate attempt to shut the door before MCFC could have join the party.

Yeah!... I remember once me suggesting a mate on here to look after our great chairman's CV and keep a relaxed cool over the Blue future...

Very encouraging to see that our mentality and how others view us is moving away from one of us in relation/compared to the scum.
We are City, with our own unique identity.
Future is bright, future is blue

But I was in the barber's this morning and a bloke having his haircut said that if we lose it now, the owner will probably get bored and leave. Surely he can't have been wrong, as he seemed really intelligent.

Thing is, I don't even feel the need to rise to that anymore. Not so long ago I'd have defended us, but I just treated him like the imbecile he was instead and ignored him.

As the article alludes to, I used to wish them bankrupt, out of league, finished. Now, I just don't care. In fact, I'd quite like watching them finish second to us in everything, as that would hurt more than the years of obscurity we went through.

They just revealed a part of the plan for the year 2027 onwards if that helps.

A tad off topic but I wonder what our owners feel about spending all that cash on the getting an F1 race and it being known as the worst circiut on the grid. I'd be fuming if I was them. It certainly does more harm than good to enhace their brand.
