"BBC renews Match of the Day deal

The BBC has agreed a new deal to broadcast Premier League highlights until the end of the 2015-16 season.
The current deal had been scheduled to expire at the end of next season but a three-year extension has been signed.
The rights cover the Saturday evening Match of the Day programme, the Sunday morning repeat, MOTD2 on Sunday evenings and other evenings when Premier League fixtures justify a show.
The programmes will be available on the BBC's iPlayer from midnight on Mondays.

The BBC retained the rights with a bid of £179.7m.

The first ever Match of the Day was broadcast on 22 August 1964 and top-flight rights have switched between BBC and ITV since then.
Premier League highlights returned to Match of the Day in 2004-05.

The show is hosted by former England striker Gary Lineker, with Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson and Alan Shearer among the regular gormless twats spouting off twaddle and shite."

Better than ITV I suppose but spend very little time watching MOTD.

Having watched the Final day MOTD, 5 times now I agree the commentary is so anti - City and Pro- United they may as well mothball the shit.

As far as I can make out, there are c. 20m TV licences bought each year (plus those dished out for free to the elderly). That's 3 quid per license per season PLUS the expenditure of making the show and paying the pundits.

Not worth it, in my opinion.

Don't mind the programme but FFS freshen it up. Get Big Ears and Mary Poppins off. Trite as fuck.

I'm glad we have a programme on terrestrial television that shows highlights of all the Premier League games, I just wish it was better than Match Of The Day.

Listening to the same dinosaurs saying the same things week after week became boring a long time ago.

They need to get some interesting presenters who know what they are talking about, don't patronise and don't have personal agendas.

Who exactly are you thinking of.
ITV and ESPN have both had pretty dreadful presenters and let's not forget that Sky has brought us Paul Merson.
Pundits trot out the easy line. It makes them sound wise. They can't possibly know every club as well the fans of that club, so they spout the shite that other clubs fans know about them.
e.g. What do we know about Wolves? They don't defend well and were a bit harsh on Mick, following up with a fuck up of an appt. But if you have watched them every game, seen the bad substitutions, seen what has worked well, know the players strengths and weaknesses, the above opinion seems trite. But if satisfies fans of all the other clubs. But the Opinion is formed and counted as gospel.

There must be some pundits out there who are better than the fossils currently employed by MotD.

Hansen can't enjoy any game in which goals have been scored because all he sees are the mistakes the defenders have made.

Lawrenson always looks like he doesn't want to be there and would rather be doing anything else other than talking about football. When he does talk about football it is to moan and complain about something.

Lineker is a drip who has no opinion of his own but just goes along with what Statler and Waldorf say without trying to rock the boat too much.

I hardly ever watch motd these day's but when i do i normally enjoy them.
Work etc doesn't help as i always miss it.
Will tune in next season when i can.
The only tv i really watch is either motd or top gear with the odd wildlife programe here and there.

I like MOTD

Don't watch as much as I used to but it's going to be great next season to see us lift the pot every week!

That's unless they decide to scrap that part of the show.

MOTD is to football what tabloids are to the news, it tends to boil it down to headlines and soundbites for people with short attention spans or limited time, but can still be entertaining every now and then.

I tend to Sky + it, that way I can flick through all the "punditry" and some of the crap games. So for what I want from it, it serves its purpose.

I agree Craig, like you, I tend to view it later and run through it. Usually I watch the action but skip the punditry.

The sad thing is that MOTD could be so much more. In its day, it was an iconic BBC programme, but much like TOTPs, it has become tired and predictable. TOTPs eventually died a death, it became weary and the BBC put it out of it's misery. MOTD has a fabulous product but is being allowed to become boring.
As a record of goals and incidents, it is no more than useful.

I dont mind MOTD but i do think the pundits need a kick up the arse. Very predictable and rarely have opposing opinions.

Live it or not at least soccer saturday a) has a few laughs and b) have pundits that have an opinon and stick to it, not just agreeing with each other every single week.
