Sparky's Retreads....

What's with QPR?

They have a wedge. And yet Sparky's grabbing players like Johnson and Nelson on a free, and linked with the pap that haven't kicked a ball in anger for City in years.

With all the cash that QPR allegedly has, why aren't they putting their foot on the gas and buying some really top shelf players to build upon?

One argument I'll accept is that just scraping a relegation dogfight means he needs some experience and quality like all the players mentioned, but...honestly...did the sack of shite that Hughes bought when he was with City bring us any glory or just delay the inevitable outlay of cash with a decent manager? Vinnie and Nige aside -- and this is my point, those are the kinds of buys he needs to be making -- who did he buy who really influenced our fortunes? I guess we have to count Tevez in that lot, but i don't for a second believe that was "his" signing. Do you?

just feeling like once again Hughes is "blackburning" it...what's the line "if you want to see how good someone is with money, give him some money"?

Not an anti-Sparky rant...everyone knows i was a longtime licker, first time poster.

cheers

Zabaleta.

I agree with your point, Hughes was buying very well until the money rolled in.

QPR haven't been giving the managers much money so far.

I think if i remember right, Fernandes said after they were saved, that soon the fans will hear a big news coming from the club. Some suggested that they are going to have a new stadium, but i didn't hear that news confirmed by anyone.
I think they will be the new Fulham. Mid table at tops regarding who they will transfer.

if you've got those big F1 bollocks tho, why aren't you trying to use them to give the League a roman soldier helmet? bizarro to me...complete waste of time. Those are the owners i'm more fearful of...like the chinese dude who owns BIrmingham or the Venky's spastics....pretending to be wadded, or being actually wadded, and just fucking about like it's Civil War Reenactments or Dungeons and Dragons.

cheers

I'm sure he's got a budget he's working with and will build the squad. I bet he'd love to bring in some top drawer players but it's going to take time. So you start with the players you know and trust to build your club culture. We had an accelerated plan for success. I suspect with FFP that QPR will need to take a bit longer.

I've read this thread title about 20 times, but not until now did I see that it doesn't say "Sparky's Retards".

In fairness to him, of the current squad he bought Lescott, Vinnie, Nige, Zabba, Tevez, Barry he also brought Ade, SWP, Given and Bellamy who did well for us for a time.

He had a lot of flaws but I think his record in the transfer market (barring a few stinkers) wasn't too bad at all and a lot of the players mentioned above are mainstays of the side.

Although the owners at QPR are minted, I don't think they have the commitment to seeing the club rise right to the top by throwing the 100's of millions at it that would be needed. Yet another reminder just how lucky we are to have our owners.

Hughes did make some very good signings for us.

Vinne and Nige. Bellamy was a fantastic acquisiton. Given gave us a very good year and a half and allowed Hart to go and develop. Adebayor still scored quite a lot of goals, his problem was with Mancini. Santa Cruz was a shite one i'll give you that. Bridge wasn't great but marginally better than what we had.
Zabalate aswell! Fantastic signing. Wright Phillips was decent for us at the time and better than what we had.
Lescott has proven to be a great signing.

Barry aswell.
Criticize his man management or tactics but he did make some very good signings for us. Kompany at 6 million!

Exactly,Hughes did do some good work but he also ballsed some up.

I would love to know what dirt RSC and Bridge have got on him its either that of Hughes has got a hard on for them.

Agree - he has manged both and probably saw them as a bit of a bonus as were on free transfers. Still plenty of time to spemd whatever money has been made available to him.

Its also worth noting how that many of Hughes' good signings now look infinitely better players under Mancini...as good a signings as they've turned out to be, I don't for one second think some of them would be the players they are now if he hadn't moved on. Kompany and Zaba being the main examples.

i think it's simply a matter of the 'prem proven' players that hughes loves to splash the dosh on will take much more motivating to go to QPR (aka more money). Probably pricing them out of a move for now. Also ... that squad needs some major reinforcing and bringing in some older, but steady producers, probably isn't such a bad idea.

I wonder if he will look to the continent to try to get some 5-10m deals done for players that haven't been tried in the prem yet, as personally, I don't feel like he is totally comfortable doing that. Vinnie and Zab and Nige can't be faulted as purchases, but I'm a little reluctant to give him credit for those finds, I really think we had them scouted before Hughes.

2 July 2008 FW Jô CSKA Moscow £18m[11][12]
30 July 2008 DF Tal Ben Haim Chelsea £5m[13][14]
21 Aug. 2008 DF Vincent Kompany Hamburg £6m[15][16]
28 Aug. 2008 MF Shaun Wright-Phillips Chelsea £8.5m[17][18][19]
31 Aug. 2008 DF Pablo Zabaleta Espanyol £6.45m[20][21]
31 Aug. 2008 DF Gláuber Nuremberg Undisc.[20][22]
01 Sep. 2008 FW Robinho Real Madrid £32.5m[23][24]

Those are not Mark Hughes signings. These are:

03 Jan. 2009 DF Wayne Bridge Chelsea £10m[25][26]
19 Jan. 2009 FW Craig Bellamy West Ham £14m[27][28]
21 Jan. 2009 MF Nigel de Jong Hamburg £16m[29][30]
01 Feb. 2009 GK Shay Given Newcastle Utd. £5.9m[31][32][33]

Though I'm still not sure Nige was Hughes purchase, there's no way I could know one way or the other. Given was a no brainer, one of the best GK's in the prem at the time.

Anyway, splitting hairs ... but in my opinion, continental europe is a secondary player pool for hughes, he'll overpay for prem players 6 days out of 7, before even thinking about searching across the channel.

Hughes said he wanted to sign zabaleta and kompany when he was at blackburn if i remember rightly, but the latter in particular was always out of his budget, and he would have made a move for zab if he was still at rovers.

If that is the case than maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember hearing that at all.

ninja edit: I did just google it and found an article from the sun that just has that one sentence, 'hughes was interested in zabaleta while at blackburn and will now look to bring him to city' ... not sure I buy that but hey, i might just be wrong.

I feel like posting something like

You can't pick ANC choose which of his signings you give him credit for, with the possible exception of robinho and Jo.

But I'm sure I'd be called a licker by some brain dead moron who cant just read what I wrote rather than what they want to see.

Quite the opposite. Apart from Robinho, it was clearly stated that Hughes had final say over Jo, ALL the players signed, good or bad, were essentially Hughes decisions. How much he was involved in scouting? I don't know. But there wasn't anyone buying players behind his back. Even Marwood came much later.

Hughes was poor coach who was never going to make Zabaleta and Kompany into players they are now BUT it was HUGHES who made the call on those signings. It was also him who made the Club to spend 32m on RSC and Bellamy.

Yes Hughes probably had final say but I'm sure persuading him to agree to take some of the players that the board wanted wasn't too difficult.

The same thing happened with Milner and AJ for Bob.

This goes on at every club( bar maybe clubs where the manager is in situ for a number of years )and is one of the main reasons for breakdown in relationships between managers and chairman. I'm sure it is what Bob was referring to last summer when he was going on about having more control at the club.
