Manchester City and Italy striker Mario Balotelli is set to become a father, ex-girlfriend Raffaella Fico has revealed.

“I phoned him before the Germany game and told him I was expecting his child,” Fico told Chi magazine. “After a brief moment of silence, he told me that I had given him the best news in the world.”

Balotelli and Fico had been in a relationship until they separated on April 29. “I found out in mid-May,” she added.

“I went to a chemist outside of Milan and bought a pregnancy test. I found out that I was expecting, but I only told my mother and brother.”

Given the news, the couple are set to try to patch up their relationship. “Mario and I are rebuilding,” she continued.

“Mario has never stopped loving me. He’ll be a playful father and a sweet, loving and kind partner.

“Those who think that I would have wanted to trap a rich footballer will have to think again. I do not need the money.

“The truth is that we both wanted this child. He told me at Christmas that he wanted to marry me and have kids – I accepted.

“What happened then happened, but one thing is for certain – the child will have the Balotelli surname with pride.”

She was living with Mario in Manchester until their break up. I reckon she'll move back.

I'm sure those page 3 photos don't need her to actually live in Italy. Nice pair of plastic tits though.

If she does move here it could be great for Balotelli.

Not only the responsibility but the fact that he can buy all those train sets & Lego etc & keep himself busy.

First thing I thought was if she's known since May why wait until the eve of their biggest (at that point) game in the tournament to tell him, why not before the tournament, or after.

Congratulations to him.

My first thought was, the stories NEVER end with this guy.. never.

Now, as long as he scores 20+ a season and plays great noone cares, but you cannot be a big personality and be liked by fans if you don't deliver on the pitch!

I wished he had found a nice and grounded Mancunian lass, a la mrs. Vinnie, rather than just an Italian wag from big brother...
that would have helped to fullfil his talent, more possibly.

Good luck and hope for the best...

We should have known it wouldn't go smoothly:

Balotelli has now issued a press release in which he claims that he has no intention of shirking his responsibilities, but is seeking a DNA test to prove that he is indeed the father.

"Although I would have preferred not to speak about my private life in public, I feel obliged to clarify, once and for all, my relationship with Raffaella Fico," the 21-year-old explained.

"Our relationship ended at the start of April and since then we have not met, nor heard from one another.

"I have not had anything to do with her life and Raffaella has not had anything to do with my life.

"Raffaella knows well that since we parted company with one another that I had, and have, no intention of returning to her.

"But because of what there was between us, I never wanted to talk about it, even when there were untrue things being said and written about us.

"A few days ago I came to learn from others that Raffaella was pregnant. For this reason, I decided to contact her and only after my question was it confirmed to me that it was true.

"I am very disappointed. I do not think it's normal not to know anything until the fourth month [of the pregnancy].

"I do not understand why she did not contact me immediately to tell me something of such importance.

"I'll assume all my responsibilities when I have the proof of my paternity."

Balotelli continued: "Also, it annoys me to see that she has already sought to make money from this story by selling photos and interviews.

"I think that Rafaella is already famous enough not to have to take advantage of this story for publicity purposes.

"This is the first and only time I will discuss this topic in public and so I have no intention of replying independently to what is said or written by Raffaella."

Fico had claimed that Balotelli, who netted twice in the Azzurri's 2-1 victory over Germany, had been overjoyed with the news that she was expecting.

Far too much common sense in that statement from Mario for the press - wonder how it'll be spun? Cue headlines later this week "Balotelli disowns mother of his unborn child" and "Balotelli shirks parental responsibility"

In Mario's situation you would cetainly want DNA proof, given the situation outlined here.
