City and David Silva Close to Agreeing Bumper Contract
Manchester City and David Silva close to agreeing new £190,000 per week five year contract
Manchester City are reportedly close to tying Spanish playmaker David Silva to a new five year deal. The 26 year old former Valencia winger signed for the English champions in 2010, for £24m and a four year contract and has established himself as one the club's and league's best attacking players.
His performances and form saw interest from Spanish champions Real Madrid, who were ready to offer City £30m for the Spain international. In fact, interest from Madrid has been long-standing, if tentative, with the nine time European champions having contacted Valencia back only months before Silva signed for Roberto Mancini's side.
However, Silva rubbished talk of his leaving the Etihad and was quoted as acknowledging and appreciating the interest from Madrid (and Barcelona) but committing himself to City.
"City believed in me and I'm very well here. Real Madrid and Barcelona are definitely two great clubs but I hope to stay in Manchester for many years," the 26 year old playmaker said back then.
In response, City were reported as scrambling to offer Silva a new deal. An earlier IBTimes UK report suggested club chiefs were readying a £200,000 per week five year deal (worth £52m in total) to the diminutive attacker, which would place him in the same wage bracket as Ivorian international Yaya Toure and Argentineans Carlos Tevez and Sergio Agüero.
Goal.com now reports negotiations between the club and the player's representatives have almost successfully concluded, with a £190,000 per week offer understood to be on the table. Silva's present contract expires in 2014 and the offered deal will extend it to 2017, which should effectively kill any hope of Madrid signing the player.
Manchester City are presently fourth in the Premier League, with seven points from three games. Mancini's side will resume the fight to defend the league title on 15 September, when they travel to play Stoke City. Then comes the big game... City's Champions League opener against, ironically, Real Madrid. The game will be on 18 September, at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Madrid chiefs will certainly be keeping a close eye on Silva's performance should the contract not be signed by then.
Welcome to Manchester, Maicon! Balotelli greets new signing on first day at training
It's like that awkward moment when you're introduced as the new kid in class.

Except in this case the new kid is a world class defender and his classmates are the Barclays Premier League champions.
Maicon has arrived at Manchester City's Carrington training base and shared an embrace with Mario Balotelli - his team-mate at former club Inter Milan & Carlos Tevez.

City's new boy then got down to training with his new as the club prepare their return to league action with a clash against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.
City boss Roberto Mancini secured the Brazilian right-back in a £3million deal on transfer deadline day.
Signing the defender was one of Mancini's main aims as the transfer window closed and the club agreed a deal with the Italian giants.
Maicon is regarded as one of the world's best players, although he was humiliated by Tottenham's Gareth Bale in the Champions League two seasons ago.
Brazil international played under Mancini at Inter but was in the final year of his contract before he headed to join the champions.
The 'inner chimp' did it: Barton explains Manchester City red card
The Marseille midfielder's last-day red card for elbowing Carlos Tevez and scuffling with two other players earned him a 12-match ban but he insists that he wasn't himself
Marseille midfielder Joey Barton has blamed his violent actions on the final day of 2011-12 Premier League campaign on his "inner chimp".
Barton, who has been loaned to the French side from parent club QPR for the season, was shown a straight red card for elbowing Carlos Tevez before violently squaring up to Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany as the Rs lost 3-2 to Manchester City.

But the 30-year-old, who still has nine games of his 12-match suspension to serve as a result of his actions in the dramatic season climax, insists that he was not in control of himself at the time.
"I completely let myself down but it's not a rational situation," he told GQ Style of the incident.
"I knew we could be relegated, they could win the league and I'm captain. There's a bit of a media spotlight on me so if we go down, I'm going to take a lot of s***.
"I was already getting it on Twitter so pressure started building and I didn't handle it well. My inner chimp doesn't work well with injustice, it reacts too quickly.
"Tevez has done what he’s done, I have reacted and the aftermath is ... I look at it now and it's almost like it's not me. I'm like: 'What the f*** were you thinking?'
"At the time in some weird way I thought it was the correct way but, looking at it now, I know it wasn't. I've got to learn a lesson from that. The thing it reiterated to me was just how far I am from the person I want to be."
Barton added that, during a spell in prison in 2008 after a conviction for assault and affray, he had spent time in anger-management classes as well as addiction support groups.
"I was on a journey and I have a really inquisitive mind so I wanted to learn more. I used to go to AA meetings just because I was interested in what people were saying," he told the magazine.
"I even went to NA meetings and I've never touched a drug in my life. Anything that gets you out of your cell is a bonus."
Aguero, Mascherano transfers under investigation
Authorities in Argentina are investigating alleged tax evasion in the transfer of 444 footballers, with deals involving Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Barcelona's Javier Mascherano among those under the spotlight.
"An investigation is under way concerning supposed (tax) evasion in transfers of footballers," a senior judicial source told AFP on Monday.
Other well-known players whose transfers are now under scrutiny include Pablo Zabaleta of Manchester City, Ever Banega and Pablo Piatti of Valencia, Martin Demichelis of Malaga and Diego Forlan, now of Internacional in Brazil.
However, the same source told AFP that the Federal Administration of Public Revenues (AFIP) will only be able to investigate any irregularities involving transfers of players from Argentina to foreign countries.
As a result, Aguero's move from Independiente to Atletico Madrid will be investigated, but not his subsequent move to City.
Similarly, Mascherano's switch from River Plate to Corinthians is also being examined, but not his later moves to England or Spain.
Financial operations involving footballers have become less and less transparent because of the growing proliferation of private investors and intermediaries who hold player registrations.
Among the cases which persuaded federal judge Norberto Oyarbide to ask the AFIP to investigate football transfers in the country was the sale of defender Jonathan Bottinelli to River Plate.
The 27-year-old moved across Buenos Aires from San Lorenzo, although a Chilean club was also involved in the deal.
"Irregularities were detected in several transfers involving first division players," said the AFIP last month.
"One of the most emblematic cases involved the strange sale of Jonathan Bottinelli to River Plate, in which a Chilean club held the registration of the player."
Because of their suspicions, the AFIP suspended 146 agents and asked for 12 players, including Bottinelli, to be stopped from playing until their situation has been clarified.
Oyarbide is also in charge of an investigation into the supposed falsification of European Union passports in order to facilitate transfers of Argentine players abroad.
Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry faces battle
GARETH BARRY is facing a battle to reclaim his Manchester City place following the arrivals of Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia.
Barry is fit again after a double hernia operation in the summer, which ruled him out of Euro 2012 and City’s opening three Premier League games.
After two run-outs for City’s Under-21 team, Barry is hoping for a recall to the squad for Saturday’s trip to Stoke.
But he admits the signings of Rodwell and Garcia for a combined £31m have given manager Roberto Mancini plenty of options.
He said: “I know Jack better because he’s an English guy and has been playing in the Premier League for a few years and he’s a great addition to the squad.”
Barry, a key but unsung figure in City’s championship triumph last season, admits he has been frustrated to miss the start of their title defence.
He added: “This is the longest period of my career that I’ve been sidelined with injury.” Express
Free transfer: Manchester City give away Etihad Stadium furniture to good causes
When City decided to revamp their plush executive suites at the Etihad stadium, they sent out the old furniture on a free transfer.
Blues bosses spent thousands upgrading their swanky boardroom and Mancunian suites where fans pay upwards of £3,900 to watch matches.

And the club’s charity arm, City in the Community, swooped on the out-of-favour tables and chairs like a manager on deadline day.
They identified a number of worthy causes and then drafted in a safe pair of hands to make sure the furniture arrived at its new homes safely – ex-City keeper Alex Williams. Alex, who is from Moss Side and made more than 100 appearances for the club in the 80s, now manages City’s Connell Awards which reward sports clubs and schemes that work with youngsters.
Alex, 50, said: “We refurbished two of the suites at the Etihad and we wanted to give whatever we could to local charities so they can save money and spend it on something else.
“All of the stuff was really top of the range and only two to three years old. There was tables, chairs and some dividers which we are hoping they can use for training and courses.” Those to benefit were mentoring charity ReachOut!, the Factory Youth Zone in Blackley, Denton Youth Junior Football Club, Newton Heath Facility and Manchester council sites the National Squash Centre, Moss Side Leisure Centre and Ardwick Sports Hall.
Alex added: “This year’s Connell Awards have been opened to the whole of Manchester after we originally concentrated on east Manchester. It is open to everyone who works with young children regardless of who they support.”
He also praised the club’s Abu Dhabi owners for allowing them to continue the legacy of City’s founder. Anna Connell, who the awards are named after, set up St Mark’s Gorton church football team in the 1880s to take young men off the streets and improve their wellbeing. MuEN
Manchester City and Chelsea given FFP wake-up call by Uefa
Manchester City and Chelsea have been given a wake-up call by Uefa, who have taken the first steps towards implementing their financial fair play scheme by hitting a range of European teams.
23 clubs competing in Uefa competitions this season have had their prize money temporarily withheld, as the organisation seeks to encourage sides to be financially stable.
While no Premier League sides have currently been affected, this strict approach could cause shockwaves through clubs including Manchester City and current European Champions Chelsea, who are both heavily financed by outside investors Sheikh Mansour and Roman Abramovich.
As part of Uefa’s requirements, clubs must provide information regarding the status of any overdue payments by the end of June, with 23 sides falling foul of repayment rules.
These clubs include European heavyweights such as Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon and Fenerbahce, who will receive no prize money while investigations continue.
The only side competing in this season's Champions League to so far be affected are Spanish side Malaga, who finished fourth in La Liga last season.
Any club under further investigation has until the end of September to provide an updated situation with regards to overdue payments towards other clubs, employees and tax authorities.
Meanwhile, Uefa’s strict stance will remain in place until repayments have been made or until a final decision by the Uefa Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) is taken.
6ft 5ins Manchester City goalie Angus Gunn, 16, has a big, big future - now he's found a suit that fits
When young City goalkeeper Angus Gunn decided to kit himself out with a suit to look good off the pitch he hit a stumbling block – his height.
The 16-year-old is already 6ft 5ins, weighs 81kg – more than 12 stone – and is still growing.

He discovered he was too tall to get the perfectly-sized suit from most high street stores.
But staff at High and Mighty on King Street in Manchester city centre came to the rescue and offered to make him a bespoke suit – in City colours.
Angus – the son of former Norwich and Scotland keeper Bryan Gunn – is just two inches shorter than England’s tallest footballer Peter Crouch.
After being put in touch with High and Mighty, Angus had his measurements of a 38in inside leg and 36in waist taken by tailors at the shop and went to pick up his new smart outfit with his dad.
He was so happy with the results that he wore his suit when he was awarded his scholarship at the club’s academy.
The highly-rated teenager, a former pupil of St Bede’s College in Whalley Range, is now wearing his made-to-measure attire on special occasions, including some matchdays.
Angus, who is the under-18 goalkeeper for the Blues and an England under-17 international, said: “It has been difficult for me in the past to find clothes that are the right length with the right fit as I am tall but slim.
“It was a really nice experience for me.”
Liam Hawkey, assistant manager at High and Mighty, said: “We launched our bespoke suit fitting service to offer men of all sizes the chance to have a tailored suit with all the trimmings – chosen by them.”

Peter Crouch in England exile after Euro refusal - Roy Hodgson
Peter Crouch is in England exile after the striker refused to be on manager Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 stand-by list.
Stoke City's Crouch, 31, was overlooked for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, despite injuries to Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll depleting Hodgson's resources.
Hodgson said: "I selected him for the Euros but he didn't want to come.
"He made it clear that unless he was in the squad he didn't want to be considered."
Crouch for England
•Debut: versus Colombia, 31/05/2005
•Last appearance: versus France, 17/11/2010
•Appearances: 42
•Goals: 22
Hodgson continued: "As a result, we've selected squads since that time when I felt I didn't need him here. I'm not going to bring him here to fill up the bench. The day Crouch gets in the England squad is when I think he should be in the original 23."
Crouch, who believes his new partnership with Michael Owen at Stoke could revive his international ambitions, has scored 22 goals in 42 appearances but has not played for England since 2010.
However, Hodgson said that both Crouch and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent - who is also out of favour at the moment - could still have an international future.
The manager said: "They have both played for England in the past. Darren Bent was injured for a large part of last season and the new season is only three Premier League games old. He is a player we'll be following.
"I was thinking Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney when I put this squad together but I lost Rooney a week before and then Carroll at the last minute. I've not dismissed anybody, even Peter Crouch."
