Folks... help me out...

Just been watching this video.....

The Niall Quinnn Penalty save vs Derby County in 91.

It got me thinking... why was there no sub-keeper? Were there different rules, was the other keeper injured or did we just not plan for that kind of thing?

Forgive me for not knowing the answer as I was only a nipper back then!

I remembver that game like it was yesterday

"he scores when he's out, he saves when he's in, you ain't seen nothing like Niall Quinn"

Reserve keepers were seldom used back then for minor things like sending offs ... it was proper footie if you like

So we wouldn't have even named one on the bench? Crazy! To be fair, when your forward's also a world class keeper I guess the selection is justified!

You only had 3 subs back then as well I think, so most sides didn't "waste" a place for a keeper

that's right. It followed the time up to the mid sixties when there were no substitutes at all. That was when it was a contact sport and they just played through the pain.

Chinner's right. It wasn't until 1995 that you were allowed to have more than three players on the bench (it went up to five).
The risk of an injury or a red card to a keeper was quite small, so most teams opted for three outfield players on the bench.

Now thats a blast from the past.Quinn was a great player for us we should never have let him go when we did.

Enjoy him on sky now when he does our games. It's refreshing to have someone commentating who you know is behind us.

Just thought - It'd make a nice poster-status... e.g (Horlock's Aggressive Walk).

Good shout, it was one of my favourite moments as a City fan. I was a Quinn fan boy back in the day and haven't looked back since.

Ha. I met him when I was about eight years old and I was just about the same height as his legs, I thought he was a giant.

Did Saunders ever score a penalty against us? I seem to remember he missed one for Liverpool (the customary dodgy award against us!!) the season after. I also think he missed one for Villa at Villa Park as well. Happy days!!

One of the few things I clearly remember from childhood city memories. Loved the big man.

He saved the penalty but what was he doing when Derby scored!!!
Remember the game well, can't believe it was 21 years ago.

I was thinking that, no-mans land or what. I think he was trying to play the offside trap with the defenders!
