Joe Hart....bulit up to knock down??

Postby Sister of fu » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:53 am

We have seen this time and time again in the English media when they build someone up to knock them down. Keepers are especially susceptible to this kind of treatment and in particular English goalkeepers. We have seen David James and Paul Robinson on the end of some pretty nasty campaigns within the media and you could say their careers never quite recovered.

Are we worried that the next campaign of hate is making its way onto the shoulders of our very own Joe. How sad is it that when Joe became England’s number one the first thing I though was “ how log before the hate campaign starts” seems it hasn’t taken long.

IMO the problem Joe has which is no fault of his own is that he does not have any genuine competition for his place. I think we saw the best of Joe when he had Shay Given breathing down his neck two seasons ago. At England there isn’t really anybody, both Fraser Foster and John Ruddy are untried at the level and are they both really in the same class as Joe?? Is Joe as good as we think he is??

I personally think he has ever chance to be the best in the world but anymore showings like last night will only add fuel to the fires that he isn’t quite all that and cocky to boot. I hope for Joes sake that he has very broad shoulders because any slight mistakes after last nights performance are going to be under the microscope from now on.

Had pretty much exactly the same conversation down the pub last night, my mates were having a go saying he's cocky and been shit this year (from a rag btw) and I said its not his fault England have got no competition for him and he's still a top, top goalie as shown by City conceding fewest goals in the prem so far and apparently we've got a totally shit defence in front of him.......plus pointed out that the scum had conceded 6 more goals than City for good measure!

I think they'll try it, & some will do it purely to try & weaken us as a club, but Joe just doesn't seem like the kind of character to worry about mistakes & he has the talent to back it up. He was nervous & pretty dreadful when he first went to Birmingham, but that season seemed to be the making of him & nothing seems to phase him now, he just gets annoyed rather than worried.

I'm sure he'll make other mistakes but then he'll just turn in a brilliant performance at a crucial time, like he did v Dortmund after a couple of iffy moments in earlier games. People mention David James etc but he did tend to analyse & worry about everything.

Joe is more like Schmeichel.

To be fair it's only because he plays for us. How many previous England keepers have taken stick on here and elsewhere. If Joe played for some other club then 90% on here would be ripping shit out of him as well.

Poor game in meaninghless friendly, that suits me fine saving his better performances for us

It's the English media mentality, especially when it comes to goalkeepers. One bad game and suddenly everyone is questioning him.

He'll be winning trophies with City for the next 10 years and has already proved this season and the two before why he's the best in the league. I don't think the competition arguement matters as the guy seems pretty motivated.

One of his strong points is his mental toughness, he can cope with mistakes which sets him apart from most keepers. I think he'll cope with pretty much anything they can throw at him.

As a keeper I think you are judged on how you bounce back when you have made errors and from what i have seen of Joe he is very strong mentally. I can recall Joe being a bit dodgy prior to Dortmund but then he played the Dortmund game and was out of this world. That’s the sign of a great player and someone that doesn’t let things play on his mind. I think this is something that David James lacked.

Joe will be well aware of how poor he was last night but I can’t see the same kind of mistakes happening at City. Last night I saw again that there seems to be communication problems between him and Cahill. There were two occasions last night where they got in each other’s way and wasn’t Cahill injured before the Euros due to a similar "to me to you" type of moment. Iv not seen that at City but I guess it makes a difference playing with the same players week in and week out. If Cahill is going to play for England then that needs addressing ASAP.

One problem Joe will have when playing behind Cahill, is that Cahill is shit.

Joe is playing in a piss poor England team. Any goalkeeper would be exposed in that team.

Absolutely right re Cahill and then they added Shawcross to the mix. Joe is a strong character and as SoF says he will know he had a poor game but that's gone now and he will just get back to training and work harder. He has a keeper coach that won't let him slack off as well which will be good for him so I don't think there is anything to worry about for Joe now matter if or how the press go after him

Having Johnson at right back is also another nightmare waiting to happen and, last night, Leighton Baines was all over the place.

Joe must have aching to have Joleon and Jagielka in harness in front of him as the back line, last night, looked like a set of amateurs.

very good thread, and couldnt be otherwise coming from a pro keeper.
Fu introduces a concern that have serious ground, not only on history of England's number ones.
As already mentioned, and pretty in common knowledge, keeper is a very special role, much influenced by the player ability and attitude to stay focused for 95 minutes, sometimes being challenged only once or very few, particularly at winning sides. Same influence lays upon retain confidence and self-belief on own skill.

Imo, the answer it's not written, for almost every keeper, and keeps going season after season on their abality to build up on mental strength.

I am very confident that we and England have in Joe a very solid person, who still in premature age for the role has already proven himself as made of top stuff. A couple of dodgy spells might even comes, as happened to almost every top keeper in the history of the game, but for what I have seen by our Joe, he will keep improving, shake shoulders when dodgy moments shall come, but I hardly can foreseen a blow out on his career. The bloke's massive guts, imo and comes his late twenties/early thirthies I would not be surprised at all if he will end up acknowleged amongst the best of all time.

i think his assist for Ibra's scissor kick was one of the best pieces of play i've ever seen. That wasn't easy, and people should give Joe more credit for his effort.

cheers

I'll start by saying that 100% of the media and most football 'fans' understand fuck all about goalkeeping. They think its all about shot stopping and if you concede goals that there all your fault. People don't understand things like being unsighted when the ball is kicked; they assume that because they can see it on tv that the keeper must be able to see it through a crowd of players. I didn't see all the goals last night and i'm not sure I can really comment on them but if Joe made mistakes; keepers make mistakes every single week in every single game but most people have no clue about goalkeeping they wouldn't be able to spot it.
