Maicon

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Maicon

Postby john@staustell » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:57 am

Great player but for God's sake get fit fella. Had a great view of him blowing hard and hanging about on the wing all second half like the little fella at school, intervened by odd bursts of action.

Superb comedy and I'm sure Mancini left him on as he had no opponent. When he did Kompany came outside and Maicon tucked in.

Even so in the last couple of games he has delivered the ball hard across the six yard box six or seven times, to no result. Come on strikers, get used to him!

He has, Mate.
But John has a point there, and as I said, I am under no illusion on who I'd like to put on the Tranny flank on Wednesday.

He's great coming forward, but not so sure defensively, he was sluggish at times in the first half getting back to cover his area, it was right in front of me and Agbonlahor was beating him repeatedly, Zabs on Wednesday please.

I don't know if you lot could see it on TV but at one point, Maicon was jogging down the wing & ahead of him was 40 yards of empty space, but he was fucked, so instead of running into it he just stayed back. Then suddenly, he turned toward the crowd & shouted something, then did it again, even got a pass off then carried on shouting into the crowd.

I don't know for sure because I couldn't hear it from where I am, but I'm pretty sure he got the traditional Mancunian/City welcome of: "pull your fucking finger out Maicon, you lazy bastard* " & took it badly. Hilarious.

Looks great coming forward & actually covered quite well at times at the back. Just have to be careful how we use him, & take into consideration the fact that there's a fair chance he may have to be taken off in any game he starts, so it's a wasted substitution. Bob got that bit horribly wrong at the Bernabau & it helped lose us the game.

Some fucker giving Maicon shit is a pretty good indication of how times have changed but my dream is to hear the words: "Pull your fucking finger out Messi " .

Then we really know we've arrived.

Can confirm the same exact feeling from the tv.
Him turning at the crown with that "lèse majesté" look, was priceless. Adapting to the uniqueness of the English game, and all that.
As already mentioned, I very much hope that Pablo will start vs. Madrid as Maicon not having that much in him anymore was certainly "one of the factors" because we surrendered at the Bernabau. A lesson learned I suppose.

What was the score v Real Madrid when Maicon went off? It sure as hell wasn't down to him that we capitulated at the end.

There's no doubt that Mancini knew exactly what he was getting when he brought Maicon in and ,although his absolute best might be just behind him , we have had some good glimpses in the last 2 games.

And re him not getting back to defend quickly enough I am assured he has watched Micah very closely, knowing how we all think so highly of Micah, so he has copied his recoveries. But actually I thought he was up and down very well yesterday.

Having to change your right back for the last 20 of a game at the Bernabau is asking for trouble as the new player tries to pick up the pace, with Ronaldo & Co running at him. Having the option of bringing on Maicon to stand in front of Zabaleta & stiffen up the defence & block Ronaldo, whilst hitting on the break, rather than Bringing on Zabba to replace Maicon, would have been a much more intelligent plan.

It probably would have been a better plan Ted but as doubling up on Ronaldo didn't seem to be part of any plan on the night I doubt it would have happened if Maicon had come on as sub rather than starting. That defeat was nothing to do with Maicon and all to do with team tactics when we were ahead late on.

Bit of banter, He does offer quality on the crossing, which could see us benefit. Madrid was a mad last 10 we will learn.

Agree with the crossing part and would go further to his full attacking skills. Zaba has improved massively in the attacking part of his game but still that final pass/shot isn't quite there and I expect that we will see goals and assists from Maicon if he stays fit and gets enough games.

I wish he had been fit for the WHU game as we really missed an attacking full back in that one.

Postby Mark Garrett » Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:28 pm

Maicon was decent yesterday and has shown in the past two games that attacking wise he has still got it and some of his crosses have been very dangerous. Defensively versus Tottenham, he had very little to do and against Villa yesterday he was not overworked in defending.

Definitely agree that in second half, Maicon's fitness was possibly an issue but I think the 90mins under his belt will do him some good. Have to remember that he missed the pre-season with us, played against Stoke and Real Madrid and was then out injured for about 5-6 weeks and has just come back. Good option to have.

As for Wednesday, I have no doubt that Zabaleta will be at right back and partly the reason Maicon played yesterday was to ensure that Zab was rested for taking on Ronaldo. Another factor is that Zab only came back from a hamstring trouble about 10 days or so ago - did he play for Argentina in the midweek? So Maicon was perfect for yesterday's match.

It's hard to believe that we have a player of his quality as essentially our 3rd choice rb. Still pinch myself how far we've come.

I would like to see him tried out as an actual wide player, in front of a fullback. Not to start a game but if we are in the position, for example like v Villa, at 3-0. Bring on Maicon as an attacking option. So far his crossing has been better than anything we saw from SWP, AJ or any of our right backs. He reminds me of Valencia when attacking & puts in some seriously raggy balls, which our strikers would be scoring if it wasn't for the fact that they never ever get crosses like that, so they don't expect the ball to go there.

For Rooney, those would be tap ins, as he gets those every week.

Already impressed with him, hese really good at beating the opposition player and can't half put in a decent cross, obviously his fitness isn't up to scratch but as a sub he could really become useful against tired opposition, or to just change the system.

Good signing.

Fair point, yet again, by Sir Doug. Apologies for late reply.
I was trying to make a slight similar point "without upsetting" too much Ted, by saying "one of the factors". when You are in front with 3+3 minutes to go, almost every Championship or Serie B, hard fighting side use to bring the result home: the old good sweeping all balls to the stands, and all that. we are learning and will get better season after season.

Said that, Ted is spot on re Maicon, overall: either the superstar's attitude and a little fading of pace and stamina, hardly qualify him as a fixed starter for every EPL games, imo.
On the other hand, I think You are well right in saying that Mancini knew what's doing with his purchase: almost the same as he did with Paddy Vieira. Bringing at Carrington, for cheap fees, world class experience and winning attitude to be taught by example to our FBs. and some very useful contributions, either when playing back 4 defense against certain lesser oppositions and every when the game will demand to swap at back 3, or even to use him, same as with Kolarov on the other flank on wing back role.
Gorgeous options there, with Micah, Pablo and Maicon: hardly a manager can demand more. happy days.

I thought he had a great game yesterday and got my vote for man of the match. His attacking prowess was there for all to see and although he didn't have too much defending to do, put some good tackles in. My only gripe yesterday was the countless number of times he was in acres of space on the right wing and nobody would pass the ball to him - I was screaming at the players to pass to him but we kept insisting on playing in the middle, especially in the first half when we found it difficult to break Villa down
