Newcastle was a place where we used to go in trepidation, and indeed I've seen us get a couple of beatings there in the past.
Now though, we go hopeful, possibly even expecting to win.
We always take plenty in our group to the North East and there were well over thirty of us on the train again yesterday.
And as usual a good turn out of Blues up there in the frozen North.
Stroll out of the station and their are plenty of good boozers in a very fine city centre. The fans are friendly and in general , not in the slightest arrogant. Then fall out of the pub and it's only a quick shamble to the ground. After the match the atmosphere is still good and the whole process in reverse.
Oh and yesterday had a lovely chat with ex director and Life President Ian Niven on the train home. What a gent, Blue to the core and fascinating. I was a bit pissed so he was very tolerant to put up with me for an hour or so.

Always used to love going to Villa best, but Newcastle is now my favourite visit of the season.
Any nominations?

It is hard to get past Newcastle just given the quality of the city for a booze up and the fact that the stadium is unbelievably central – I left the pub just 15mins before kick off and was in my seat in plenty of time.

Mind you – if we could guarantee Ajax in Europe every year...............

It's certainly not the best away trip but Gillingham had one of the best away pubs I've ever been to. The 'Will Addams' has lovely reasonably price ale, proper pub grub and a jukebox that only had tunes between 1975 and 1982 ... fantastic place.

Newcastle is good. I've always had a cracking time in Liverpool as well.

Both Sheffield teams, Blackburn, Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere.

Worst: Bolton, Wigan and Sunderland.

Good calls on the worst ... Middlesboring wins hands down for me, I'd even consider cheering on U'nited than ever setting foot in that place again ... seriously

Never been to a city away game but the season before last I was in Newcastle for a weekend and we went to see them play Everton. Has to be one of the most enjoyable football experiences I've had.

We were in a bar before the game and they had this guy walking on top of the bar belting out these military style chants about Newcastle. The place was rammed and everyone was chanting along with him. It was a belting atmosphere, no allegiance to either team and I was right up for the game.

Love going to Wigan, 5,000 blues milling round town

Hate going to Bolton, there's literally nothing to do there before the game. I've never been colder than Middlesbrough but Oldham comes a close second.

Liverpool is a good day out and I used to love going to Darwen when we went to Ewood.

Spot on - for a newish ground it's shit, Cleveland Police always manage to wind the atmosphere up until it all kicks off, plus I can't remember the last time we won there, it's always a shit match & basically everything about the experience is shit - however, a copper once pointed us to a decent boozer after a shite 0:0 match so that's it one & only note of potential redemption

Blackpool, even when Bloomfield Road was at its crumbling worst. Can't beat a day by the sea.

Arsenal. Simply because it's the only one I've been too.

Norwich is always one I look forward to most. I'm living in Cambridge these days so not too far/expensive either.

Does Wembley count? Apart from one unsavoury incident, that was ace.

Enjoyed Blackburn, right til the police horse-charged us out the pub car park and its fair tempered marquees. Dicks. Villa has always been a good game to go away to. Been Anfield a couple of times and loved it cos we got points, but outside was a trauma. Wolves was a good laugh. I enjoyed hte City ground cos the half time prize was a life size cardboard cut-out of Stuart Pearce. It's hard when I actually think about it, to merit an away club as bening a good trip to take, a lot of them are SAS in-out jobs for me.

Most away days for me are a bit of a stress, more than made up for by the intensity of the atmosphere in our away end.

Forgot to mention Arsenal as a good away day. First time I went I was on a coach being bossed by Big Helen, who told us not to eat or drink on the coach. Eating and drinking on the coach was thusly made a rewarding, enjoyable challenge. We were 1-0 up at ht, an Ian Brightwell goal I believe. Reidy was player manager, came on and virtually assisted Anders Limpar's destruction of us. Lost 2-1.

A far more enjoyable Arsenal away day was Dazby's birthday, also the b'day of my sister, where I met Wooders and a load I can't remember at this hour. Me, MHiggi and the Rampant Dazzlemonster basically outdid the wannabe most 24 hour cosmopolitan city in christendom, and it was good.

Oh yes - several great days out there for CITY games - normally pre-season so (sometimes) even warm!!

Never really been arsed about drinking b4/after football. Done it plenty but always preferred to take in the atmosphere etc (& the football) & still do.

Baring that in mind, I used to love going to Leeds in the 70's.

Does that make me strange ?

I also used to like West Brom, as we got our own end & made it much better than theirs (or Utd/Liverpoool's for that matter).

The fancy dress/inflatables trip to Stoke is my all time favourite though. Don't think we will ever see anything like that, on that scale, from City fans ever again. Posnan ? Aris ? You're avin a larf.. no comparison.

ffs Ted, i was only a kid then but the 2 FA cup games at Elland road in the 70's were my 1st two away days....it was a ZOO!
