Leeds United: GFH Capital completes takeover

Dubai-based private equity group GFH Capital has completed its takeover of Leeds United.

Previous owner Ken Bates is to remain as chairman until the end of the season, before becoming club president.

Analysis

BBC Radio Leeds' Leeds United reporter Adam Pope:

They've paid cash for a club that is debt-free but they would not confirm what they have paid for it.

They've bought 100% of the club and it's businesses and have already started to re-engage with fans through social media and selling half-season tickets.

They clearly support Neil Warnock, who they demanded stayed on as part of them buying the club.

Although not spending "crazy money" it looks like the intent is there to help the team get promoted.

GFH executive Salem Patel told BBC Radio Leeds: "In one or two years' time we want this club to be successful on and off the pitch.

"As a city Leeds is thriving but having a successful football club is absolutely vital."

GFH has confirmed that the deal, which is reported to have cost in the region of £52m, was paid in cash and that Leeds, who are currently 12th in the Championship and were knocked out of the League Cup by Chelsea on Wednesday, are debt free.

Patel believes that the game against the reigning European champions underlined the potential at Elland Road.

"I'm sure all of the bars, clubs and hotels were loving the business generated by the match against Chelsea," he said.

"We had 34,000 in the ground that day and that kind of atmosphere is something we are hoping to recreate every week."

He added: "What we want to do is create a successful but sustainable club and I think every fan will be with us.

"English football is one of the most successful exports that England has at the moment. People are watching world over and being part of that is very exciting to us.

"We want to take Leeds back where they belong."

Fellow GFH executive David Haigh came onto the board earlier this month and will be joined by colleagues Patel and Hisham Alrayes.

Leeds first revealed they were in talks with potential investors in May, with GFH eventually emerging as the leading bidders.

Bates confirmed the takeover was approaching completion in October and GFH has been supporting Leeds financially since entering into an exclusivity period to conclude negotiations about its proposed investment.

It was announced last month that the deal had been finalised and the company had entered a one-month transitional period with previous owner Bates, before being formally completed at 20:40 GMT on Thursday.

Patel suggested that manager Neil Warnock will be supported but that may not involve a large spend on players in the January transfer window.

"January is not a great time to do business and we already have quite a good squad with others coming back from injury," he continued.

"Neil has stated what he wants and we will try our best to provide that."

Leeds take on Middlesbrough on Saturday before travelling to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Demanded Neil Warnock stayed on.

Ok.

"If Warnock isn't part of the deal, you can fucking forget it".

Yes I can believe that...

I thought that part was quite funny too. Let's see how long he lasts once they start spending.

How long before they are back in the Prem?

I don't know mate, this GFH Capital look to be investment specialist for the Gulf Corporation Council and Islamic investment. My only wonder is whether they have bought Leeds for an individual private investor, a way of making a quick buck or if it will be used to advertise a certain brand, such as ours.

Love him or loathe him, he specialises in getting clubs from the Championship into the Prem. (He just sucks at keeping them there though). If I were the buyer I'd hang onto him 'til he got us up, then put him out to pasture with a nice fat pay off.

I know the feeling. It's horrible. I was in Manhattan in June and I was gagging for a piss, but no fucker lets you use their bogs unless you're a paying customer and the last thing I wanted was a drink. I was legging it from bar to bar, hotel to hotel along seventh avenue and very nearly wet myself. Plus I was meeting my best man and his fiancee outside Penn Station so I had to be quick. Awful.

: D

When I visited NYC, courtesy of this very site, I wondered into a McDonald's for a number one.

I'm one of those pussy English type that feel as though you should have to buy something in a place to use their loo. Yep, even a McDonald's.

Anyway after getting a Coke I joined a 6 people long queue for the single toilet. After nearly bursting my bladder I got to the front - the door opened and before I could dash inside a firm hand reached the toilet door from behind and stopped me from entering. I turned to see an officer brush past me into the toilet "Police officer, sir" he said before bolting the door shut. I was in shock for the minute or so he was in there.

To this day I still don't know if they're allowed to do that.

I'd have pissed in my hands and slung it over the top. Not really, I'd have got arrested for cottaging ;-)

Agree but Leeds are a much better choice for a club to build/sell on rather than Notts County.

If they can get Leeds back into contention, they may be able to sell to a wealthy individual or country, like Frank did with us, if they don't want to invest themselves. It would be funny watching the rags & Arsenal shit themselves & trying desperately to change the rules if a wealthy sheikh took over at Leeds.

There was a lot of talk on who actually owned Leeds and it was thought that Bates had used backers to fund the club. With the invent of the Championship FFPR he would have had to disclose the backers. It could be that these were here all the time and that Bates hasn't got has much as it seems.

A club capable of averaging 40,000 plus if successful, with a rich history.
