Uefa really are first rate idiots

Sorry of this has been covered elsewhere.

What the fuck is wrong with this? Moreover,, why has it taken till now to hand down the punishment?

Ajax have been ffined €10,000 (£8,300) by UEFA after their fans displayed a "provocative" banner that "created unrest" during their Champions League game against Manchester City. The display showed a sheikh holding a bag of money with a red line through it alongside a message reading "Against Modern Football!". However, in the same game the Ajax fans also showed a banner that read "€80 for the away section is ridiculous!", showing solidarity with the City fans who had paid that price to watch their team in Amsterdam.

Can't see any reason for them being fined.

Unless it covered advertising hoardings: that would get UEFA active.

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head there mate. This is the picture in question and although it is a dig at us and our owners it doesn't really impinge anything legally. However, those banners covering the hoardings?

As I read it (via an article on the news aggregator) they were fined for potential offence caused by the depiction of the Sheikh. A kind of 'pc' fine.

I reckon they just wanted their cut of the high ticket prices. 8 grand isn't going to do a lot to stop fans making a banner.

Ajax were part of that European elite group of teams that set up the Champions League in the hope of closing out all competition from their own leagues. So they can jog on....

I didn't know that? Are you sure about that? If it's correct, then it's almost too good to be true isn't it?

Cheers for that Arjan. I still think it's poetic that Ajax set up this programme and then became one of the big losers of the system. I also do however agree that there's too much money in the game and that it's not healthy. It is on the other hand healthy to question it, as long as it's not out of sheer envy. I do however feel a lot of envy coming out towards City so I mainly don't give a flying fuck what other people of our sheik and his money and so on. I mean, the bigger issue should be that we're owned by a dictatorship (or something like that) and not the fact that we're not so good at balancing our budget. But that's world in a nutshell I guess.

you might be right about the envy thing, but the simple fact is that football seems a lot less competitive now than it did 30 years ago - and can anyone really say that's a good thing?

and it totally is right for the fans to speak out (although i've given up expressing my extreme distaste for our current owners as no-one seems to give a fuck as long as we're winning, that "manchester thanks you" banner still makes me cringe)

Indeed. On both accounts. But I'm also content to accept the fact that we're owned by who we're owned by, in the sense that I don't lose sleep over it and we could be a lot worse off. His money also generated one of the happiest days of my life, and I can't really argue with that either. I mean... all I'm saying I guess is that I wish that football could and should be a cleaner place, less cynical and less money driven, but... it's not like a lot of people are working towards that end and then I'm not going to be bothered.

It's a damn shame though that those few who actually do have the energy do try to do something about it get fined.

Did they have banners protesting about the setting up of the Champions League as a way of closing out competition in their own league?
